I love Science Fiction...
But District 9 is not actually a Peter Jackson film. Neill Blomkamp is directing it. It's based off a 12-to-14 minute short film that Blomkamp made a while back called "Alive in Joburg". You can see the short film on YouTube. That film basically got District 9 off the ground.
I'm sure Jackson will have some impact as producer, of course, but mostly this is in the hands of Blomkamp.

I was, then I discovered girls.
Just razzing you. Not a big fan of recent attempts at the genre. The last good sci-fi movie was 2010: The Year We Make Contact, IMHO. And that was 25 years ago.

There are a number of films that I've watched over the years that really do inspire me both mentally and musically. I'm writing from the base right now but will post some links and other stuff tomorrow.

lol, it was the other way around for me; I discovered girls first, then my passion for sci-fi....mainly since I've met my wife, 10 years ago...
2010 is a great classic movie, but so are Alien, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Planet of the Apes, the Matrix and of course, Star Wars.
I also enjoy the Transformers movies.

Blade Runner was great and wasn't she just the best!

Ridley Scott is my favorite director. Alien and Blade Runner are my two favorite films. I just love how that guy puts a film together.
If you get a chance - or if you already own it - get the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Alien films (not the Quadrilogy in the green packaging). The 25th Anniversary edition has commentary on the Alien film by Ridley Scott alone. The Quadrilogy version has Ridley + producers, etc. and it's just a mess - hardly insightful at all.
But Scott's commentary by himself on the 25th Anniversary edition is the best director's commentary I've ever experienced for any film. It's just chock full of great behind-the-scenes details. Brilliant stuff.
Other great science fiction films I've enjoyed in the last few years:
Serenity
Gattica
Solaris
The Fountain (love Darren Aronofsky's work here!)
Minority Report
Dark City
Signs
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek
Contact
12 Monkeys
Total Recall

I liked the old school SF writers, Vern, Wells, Van Vought, Hineline, Norten, Blish, Clark, Silverberg, ETC,
The only new Sci- Fi writer I
m familiar with is our good'ol guitar player from the Gin House Rockers, James Gurley, (bandmix name, "BluesJim") Unfortunately for me, he writes them faster then I have time to read them.
I actually find the real scientific achievements these days far for fantastic then anything in fiction.

Anyone seen the latest Star Trek movie? I haven't, yet...went to see Transformers instead

. I'm not a Trekkie, but I've heard great things about the movie. I will definitively watch it, once it's on DVD.

I enjoy some emensly, and others well not so much.
It is almost as hard to genre'fy movies as music as so much of it is total make believe, even if " based on a true story " pretty much makes it all sci fi in some aspect.
I like the Star Wars flicks as well as the Lord of The Rings.
I alsolove movies such as Master and Commander, The Mountain Men,
Troy, Gladiator.
A lot of the old school black n white flicks are still just as good to me as the billion dollar special effects films.
Oh...... no.... look out Tokyo !!!

Um, guys, its SyFy now...
Yeah, I like science fiction, the TV channel and the entertainment genre. I do more TV than movie, but I do want to see District 9.
I'm a huge Ghost Hunters and GHI fan. Anyone watch that stuff on SyFy?
