I remembered one of my session clients, Graham Page, talking about a social network called LinkedIn. Have you guys heard of this? This is a great resourse! B2B networking, meaning networking with professional musicians, bankers, insurance guys, marketing, etc. Contacts for corporate gigs, commercial music studios, labels, instrument manufacterors, and other cool stuff.

Anyway, I go on and sign up, then find my client and get him in my network. He writes me an incredible endorsement for my LinkedIn page:

“Josh _____ is a consummate professional player. He comes to recording sessions fully prepared, asks relevant questions, and is willing to play in whatever style fits your project best. It was a pleasure to meet Josh and have him play on my recent project. I would highly recommend Josh for any project you are considering recording as he plays with great skill and passion. Yea there's so many, but MySpace and Facebook [in that order] are the main forces and that won't change for at least 3-5 years. Put all the effort in marketing both and you should be good.

LinkedIn is more for business networking, although I suppose some people use it for music biz. My profile has no mention of my music hobby.

You make money with your band, right Jimmy? You get paid for gigs, with either money, food, beer, etc? Breaking down to the most basic definition possible, your band is a business. You provide a good/service for which you are compensated.

I wasn't sure if it would work well for me either, but so far it is! I've met some great contacts, gotten a killer review from my client, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.
