if you ever saw the movie, "The Vikings," with Kirk Douglas I can refer you to the scene where I captive about to thrown in a wolf pit demands a sword so that he can die properly, with a blade in his hand.

A sword can contain a man's honour in a way not as easily perceived in a firearm. I can imagine in a dead end situation just throwing away the guns, advancing with the blade "...and going to death like a soldier." (Kipling - probably misquoted)
