Mark, your statistics are a bit off to say the least. In Toronto alone, there's 50 gun-related murders (not just crimes) in a month.. on average. And I'm being generous lol
You've got to be kidding me.

And what bout them chavs in the UK? I thought they were the reason behind every British crime. And football matches. Out of the 190 you mentioned, I bet half of em happen in Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge lol

Hello Andragon,
You are probably right in what you say here:

I believed those figures as I thought I heard them on the BBC, but I guess I cocked up somehow.
But I remember them remarking how low the death toll in Canada was despite a larger gun ownership per capita than the states.
Statistics are always a bit of a minefield I guess, and it often depends what interest group is using them at that time... though that doesn't usually apply when it's the BBC who more often leave stuff out of a report that isn't 100% verifyable... the mistake was probably mine!

Football matches in the UK seem fairly well behaved, and the all-male terraces of the 1970's are now alcohol and cigarette free with young families and women throughout.
Most people go to and from a match and never see a fight, but they do still occur of course.
You are probably right about Chelsea and Man United being the hot-spots for trouble; they called themselves the 'Chelsea Shed Boys' when I was a kid, but you just never hear about big trouble now... and the clubs get heavy fines from FIFA when their fans are caught on camera making trouble.
Racist taunts from the crowd are all but gone now; now both home grown coloured players and foreign french-African players become national heros with the fans.
A great Tottenham black british player (name escapes me... ah yes, Sol Campbell) received racist taunts from a group in the crowd a month ago, and the police have a full scale investigation ongoing to locate them, which tells you how things have changed in the UK.

The 190 deaths we average are I think mainly knife crime; we have a real problem of youths in the inner cities carrying knives, mainly claimed as protection and not usually a threat to the general adult public, but used also to make a show of toughness with fronting up to rivals being a way to show manliness, and though mostly it goes no further because fronting up is all they really have the stomach to do... but now and then it gets pushed to a fight and kids gut eachother.

Where I live in Heathfield East Sussex, there was shock and consternation a year ago when a small Turkish restaurant (my local eatery) got a brick through the front window at dead of night; it was traced to a group of bored kids from the next town going out to look for stuff to do, not criminals as such, just seriously lacking imagination!
But it's quiet here: we never lock the car at night, and mostly not when we park in Heathfield... a while ago I came back from three nights away to find my house door wide open, and assumed I had been robbed; finding nothing amiss I realised I had simply left the door open myself.
In reality I guess finding an open door might have been more likely to scare theives away!

Is it quiet round your way too Andragon?
Cheers,
Mark.................

Andrew, You know as well as I that I was just doing tounge in cheek R/T Mark's crime statisics.
Now I understand why. The BBC. You must be kidding right! The English equivelent of the AMA and Parlement dont even trust thier citizens with pointed tableware.
If your looking for REAL statistics and not just political lies you cannot trust any one sourse. Sure as hell not the BBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX need I go on! (You might as well tune into Aljazera)
Their flagerant missrepresentation of facts is obvious to any but the most simple of morons.
Blunt force truma is the leading murder statistic in the USA.
More murders by BFT than guns and stabbings combined.
Published by FBI every year. Ignored by the media, every year.

I know, George. Hence the wink in my post lol

Mark, where I am now, is not really dangerous, but there's low-to-medium criminal activity going on. Sharing the border with Detroit has always had more of a negative effect than a positive one. Downtown is relatively safe, but some spots are straight up shady. The west side of the city is a bit more dangerous than the east, due to ethnic gangs and families. However, they're all pretty tame.. and lame too :P

On another note, Sol is a good defensive midfielder.. from what I remember anyways. Been a while since I've seen a full ECC match dammit :(

Ecch more shame from NJ.

I just heard a local farmer went out with a slew of "have-a-heart" box traps to trap some local cats and forgot about them overnight.

Next day he had frozen cats, all dead.

It took every ounce of self-preservation to avoid maiming this "ass hat farmer douche bag."

This is why NJ sucks..

Could be your turn in the box, next.

Man- no power here either! Virginia's grid must not be equipped for 0 degree temps. Had to fire up the propane heaters and we cooked breakfast and coffee on her little propane stove. Power came back on about 2pm this afternoon..

Ha Ha! (I'd be laughing my friggin' ass off, if I hadn't already froze it off! )

Our well is froze up. So are all our ponds and the streams.

Luckily, we have a spring that doesn't freeze, so the essential plumbing is still functional.

Going back below 0 tonight. (Gonna woose out and fire up the ol' 'lectric blanket tonight. )
