Exactly - so the bass had already been robbed from the sound (too much bass made the needle jump around in the groove on vinyl). In some cases, the record companies couldnt' find the original masters, so just A-Ded a vinyl record straight to the CD master!
I remember buying my first few CDs, thinking that 'they'll never replace vinyl' because even though the sound was no longer scratchy/noisy, it was also thin (harshness could be taken out with some easy 5-band EQing) compared to the original albums. But then I got my first CDs that were mastered for CD production (Fleetwood Mac and Jethro Tull, I think) and was suitably impressed.

Search out one of your previous echoplex threads and bump it.

This discussion on CDs vs vinyl/ mastering sounds a lot like the tapeheads forum, if yer interested.

I think people just looked at the CD as being half the width of an LP, you could program or repeat songs, it was portable, it wasn't prone to skipping...... they just decided screw vinyl. Without really evaluating the sound quality of one vs the other.

Oh really??
Go look @ the lifespan of a CD vs. vinyl or tape.
I have CDs that are 15+ years old and they skip like mad.

I knew someone would say this, but I really have taken excellent care of my CDs and (tried to, at least) vinyl. Vinyl is much less forgiving in developing scratches and skips with regular handling. Most of the skips on my CDs have been provided by my friends and family. :x

I was speaking strictly on what happened in the 80s, when everyone from audiophiles to casual listeners decided that compact dicks were the second coming of Jesus.
Without knowing how they would perform in the next decade or two.

Vinyl was better because it came with album art!!! In my opinion, that was the biggest loss in rock & roll history. I loved Yes album covers even more than their music.

Just wasn't the same with CDs, (though you could make an 8 page cover that kept people reading for a half hour) and even less with downloads. Now its a link to another place to find the art in the middle of link bait.

Alas...the world is ending.
