I have been running auditions for years and we NEVER have the singers use a PA for the first audition. The PA is a crutch. You can really hear if someone has actual talent if they can belt it out without a microphone. If a singer can't sing well without a mike, then they aren't going to sing well with one! However, you have to have the band play at a real soft volume so you can hear what's going on. Remember American Idol auditions? They never sing with a microphone for their first auditions. They are all on their own.
