Depends on who's rules we are talking about here.

well the "rules" i referred to are the basic and accepted rules of "conventional" and "accepted harmony"....you know.....eight 8th notes equals 4 quarter notes..... a straight up DMaj7 chord is spelled D F# A C#.....a minor chord has a flat third 3rd in it...etc, etc.

There are some firm and steadfast rules of academic theory that have been broken time and again by many composers.

well of course. no argument or disagreement there. and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't (depending on the ears and musical tastes of the listener). but in any case, i was simply referring to my process. :)

I don't need no steenkin' rules .... but my compositions are directly influenced by everything I've heard over the years.

I listened to both project tracks you guys posted. Both seem like more 'noodling' over the chord structure than a well-formatted song - to me. I played around with the chords again, but just not feeling this one.

fair 'nuff.

i just went and listened to mine. and the first 1:20 has a very distinct "head" or melody over the form that's repeated and actually doubled w both gtr and mandolin....since they play the melody hook together and pass it back and forth between them....i dunno, that strikes me less as "noodling" than clear cut parts that were worked out.

and after 1:20 of them playing it together and off each other....that's when the solos (or to some ears "noodling") start. ok, i will grant that it may not be one of the strongest or more interesting melodies that I've come up!

perhaps it's nothing more than a difference in approaches and the genres we frequent, listen to, and dip our toes into. but, that's a pretty common thing for jazz tunes.....play the "head"...then open up into solos....return to the head after the solos. (i never returned to the head...perhaps if i did, the tune would come off more "structured")

thanks for checking it out. :D

Mike, try playing the chords in straight up major formations and use the bass to convey the Maj 7 feel. It's a pretty slick way to do these chords in rock music. Just play a bass line like:

D/ D/ C#/ D

Over a measure of D major on the guitar, for example.

I've got no problems with major 7ths - you'll find plenty of them in my tunes, like project #2 which was Em7 to Bbmaj7. Just this particular progression/change, didn't capture me.

Mike, are you alright? the chord selection is brilliant, but we will need Dwight Yoakum as the singer.. :)

lots of sensitive people out there, all in a worry that the treatment somebody is to apply might spoil the grand finale.. don't worry about it Mark, let the part carry on, and we can all succeed ..now, where is the latest version, and who added what to the mix? :D
