who would turn down a offer to tour, play big concerts, big money, aren't we all looking for that one chance?

Sure I'd take it if I dtermined it was a career mover. But the question is, would you never write again just to play with such an act?

The answer to that separates the performing artists and the writers.

"Hitting it big" is not the only reason to write original material. In fact I venture to guess its not even the top reason. How about simply the need to write?

Wasn't it T.S. Eliot that said "A writer writes because they must"?

Never said it was.

If one has "the need to write" and finds an audience of house plants, pets, carpeting etc. and is fullfilled, outstanding.

PaleoPete, you said:
". . . I'll stop...the same day I stop playing guitar...the day they put me in a box and drop me in a hole..."
.
I had a buddy who didn't even stop after they put him in his casket. They buried his guitar right along with him . . ."
.
True story.

These days music has many, many more "audiences" than there were in the AOR rock days. With some perseverence and dedication, any composer of any genre that comes to mind can find their audience. Their niche. And I mean an audience of people.

This attitude that its "all or nothing' - writing hit songs for top pop stars, or never writing a single phrase - is pretty shallow minded.

Again, I never said that.

Also explain to us of "finding your audience" when the music one writes sucks? Where is this audience that yearns for sucky/sub par music and why are not every one of us on this board musically successful then?

Sucks to whom? What may suck to a butt rocker could be adored by a fan of alternative. One man's trash another man's treasure, and all that.

It's a big world out there. Have you explored it much?

Then from what your saying is you would like to purchase some of my tunes? No? Why not? Because they are not very good in any genre and worth your money. :(

That being said I do agree with the other portion of your statement. With a digital media format and the WWW an artist can reach a huge base that was not possible in years past and thus increase their chances of success.

To me? Maybe not if I didn't like your music. But to others who do like your music, yes. They would likely purchase some of your songs or come to see you at a performance. This is what's called a niche audience.

That's where it starts, yeah. But you have to follow it up with real live people such as booking agents and management to make album sales and shows occur, so that you reach "your" audience. Like all things in life, the internet is a tool - not a solution.

I've thought about doing exactly that for many years. Now I just have to decide which guitar... lol For that matter my family might just do it even if I don't specify it...

You might want to specify ahead of time..
I know for a fact that they buried him with the wrong guitar.
I didn't say anything, because I figured at least he HAD a guitar...

Actually, I guess there wouldn't be a wrong guitar, any one of them would suit me just fine. I won't be around to worry about it. :D

So, man, when you're in heaven, do you want to play cover songs, or your own music?

I think if I were sitting in heaven with eternity on my hands I'd just have to break into "Stormy Monday" now and then, or "Rocky Raccoon"..."Garden Gate"..."One Brown Mouse"...

So I guess I'd have to say both.
