What's the gimmick? My CBG? I play it IN SPITE of it's novelty. I play it because I can most easily express myself musically through it. I'm building a guitar now that is more traditional in appearance because of people like you who use their eyes instead of ears to process music. It's a shame really to get that from a musician. I understand it from the musically clueless. Then again...

Paleopete wrote:Say what you want about Neanderpaul using "gimmicks" you can't play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and even kazoo, without being a good musician to begin with, no matter how you put it all together. I can play all those instruments and more myself, and I know what it takes to learn them. How many people on here can play even 2? You have to hand it to Neanderpaul, he's very talented. That's why he was the 1st one I named. Talented to the bone...

Thanks so much Pete. That is very validating.

I risk sounding like a buffoon as I try to defend myself. But so you you know paperdog, I can't read music, I've never had a lesson, and nobody taught me squat about live looping. I am music. Many if not most looping artists simply play a 4 chord progression over the on board beats and noodle for 8 excruciating minutes. I make songs that have the exact structures I want again IN SPITE of the looping format I'm using.

(I don't mean any disrespect to NP... )

Seriously? You think you can say that and not have it taken as disrespectful?
The looping allows me to play full songs with full instrumentation in arrangements I find natural. Others find it so too. I.E. I played a 3 hour show at the Taubman museum of art. An employee was listening but couldn't see me. As I was striking my kit he came up and said "y'all sounded good tonight!" He was dumbfounded when I told him it was just me. That happened because I sound like a band. Not a one man, looping band, but a band.
PaperDog wrote:I can play pretty much anything you throw at me... What I cant do, is play them all at the profssional level and skill that would land me a gig anywhere... (Yet!)

If you are still scrambling at your age to be good enough to play professionally perhaps you need to focus on something else.

Paleopete wrote:I've thought about it before, and I'm really not sure I could do what Neanderpaul does, even though I can play the same instruments, I can do them all separately, as in a multitrack recording situation, but to put it all together the way he does? ummmmm...probably not...

Humbly I thank you Pete. :D

Paperdog, I'll go ahead and address your tier rating. At 18 I had a professional level front man voice, presence etc. I got paid. In 09 I was offered $900 to play a 1hr 15 minute live looping set. I then proceeded to tour from VA to TX and back. I played 12 shows in 17 days. Stayed in hotels, ate out almost every meal, took my family out to zoos and hotels twice, and came back with cash. An unsigned, unadvertised act with a tour that was in the green. I have turned down offers to be a front man non-stop since I was 18. I have that option. Yet as Kramer guy pointed out. I do exactly what I want. I could make a living singing creed, or brown eyed girl, or Alan Jackson, or almost any country or rock, I choose to be credible in my own mind. It is my artistic gift to me.

By your tier system you must really like Bieber. He makes bank.

NOTE the MENTORSHIP that Jimmy has offered, from his position on the Tier map, respectively. With That, Jimmy (and I mean this sincerely,) My hat is off to you.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Jimmy feels the same way that I do about this one. We are equals. I think his guitar playing and my vocals are very well matched.

One final thought on the matter. Why the change of opinion paperdog?

Wow NP! SO much attention coming from you , all at once.. and yet..its still all about you.

I stand firm on my assertion. You can try to insult me about my age all you want ...but as far as I can see... I've been doing my music assertively for only 2 years now... You have been doing what you do ...much longer...All I know is that Neanderpaul is that guy who has a ton of Cigar box videos and loopers on you tube. To Me, that's an act that includes music.. Its not bad...But I don't equate it with compositional prowess. I never said your cigar box and looping was a bad thing...But yeah..Its a gimmick dude... There isn't an A & R man or a booking agent on the planet that would disagree. Sorry if that doesn't set well with you ... My statement was not intended to be disrespectful. I Do in fact believe you are extraordinarily talented... But it doesn't change my assertions.

BTW you shouldnt take that tier system too seriously... I drafted that to make a point. Its ballpark...and it can change from day to day. And just so I havent confused you or anybody else on this site....This very dialog would be moot and pointless to anybody drawing big bank. We make fun of Bieber, but he's laughing his ass off at guys like us.

Yeah, you brought me up and I defended myself. So it's all about me... right.
I'm not insulting your age. I'm saying other people had pro level talent as teenagers who may or may not make a living with. And making money has NOTHING to do with talent anyway. Look at insane clown posse. I'm sure you and other musically uninitiated people may perceive it as a gimmick. But I play a CBG and loop because it makes the most musical sense to me. I write songs in traditional and pleasing to me arrangements in spite of my tools. I know you don't get it. You further prove your sheep mentality by your thoughts on Beiber. There are thousands of rich people in the music industry with no artistic credibility. Financial success does not equal artistic musical success.

So I'm sorry ;) for being so prolific and giving you too much to digest. Maybe I can send you my whole body of around 1200 songs and see what you think after trying to digest that.

Have you seen this old one of mine? Notice the number of views? How old it is? The percentage of likes to dislikes? It Was written before I started looping. The format changed none. I can play it better now with my cigarbox guitar. Does that mean it would all of a sudden become a gimmick because I switched instruments?

WOW! It's one thing to morally denigrate each other because most of you don't deserve the right to vote or have the RIGHT TO FREEDOM.

It is another thing to attack each other on the quantitative ability to play music.

That is probably the one thing that makes any of you worth bothering with.
Paul I have enjoyed all the music you have shared. You too DAWG, and many others.

Grow some thick skins you asssholes. There is a LOT worse to come,,,BUT, AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSIC.

Musically Uninitiated, Sheep...? Wow Neanderpaul, you lob 1200 songs at me as though you are trying to convince me that somehow you are musically superior to me and everyone else... Quantity does not equal quality . Seems to me, you are a bit caught up in your own exhaust fumes. You have mechanical talent..and that's it. You're too much of a p u s s y to actually express your true soul. Instead, you rely on the limitations of an electric Monkey-grinder to get over your idea of art. I'm dying over here, young man... At the end of the day, all you have is a well rehearsed circus act. There's no poetry, no pastoral no real art to speak of, Nada! But... you CAN sing and play, dude. You should hit Vegas. You belong there. Speaking of poems, here's a lyric tailored just for you (and the marketer you aren't but wish you were)

You keep smokin your cigars...
and you sing your songs...
Play that mighty fine guitar
Loop us all along.

And I'm certain...
when that curtain...
lowers down; thers a clown,
who's been hurtin...
cause his foot is stuck in another door

This isnt me.... http://youtu.be/ca9GuwuOVZc
But it sums up my reaction to what you just said.
You have a small mind and vocabulary to cuss.
If anything I am lacking in mechanical talent. I have spent my musical life trying to get my mechanical talent to catch up with my emotional Understanding of music. Music is only emotion to me. All of it. All of music is emotion.

Again I risked sounding like a buffoon trying to debate you on this. I knew I would. But yes you irritated me that much.

The following is an example of following my muse. All this is is emotion. The mechanical skill of it is lacking. I can't expect you to hear or rather feel the nuances. But I'm going to share it anyway. And yes it's the CBG, The most powerful musical tool I've ever owned.

Glenny, One cannot morally degenerate a person about his music. At best, all one can do is call the other one names, like "Sheep" and 'Musically Uninitiated". Neanderpaul is spoiled, having grown accustomed to people kissing his ass. As you know, I'd give the shirt off my back to even the least of my friends, but I don't kiss anybody's ass. I tell it like I see it... I have nothing to prove, nothing to lose. I'm a newbie compared to Neanderpaul. But I recognize real art vs Bull sh*t when I see it. Real musicians will understand that. Others wont. It is what it is and I dont apologize for it. I dont quite understand what all the hoopla is... Its only me and my opinion. Its not like Neanderpaul has anything to worry about.

You are very disingenuous and predictable. From my point of view there was no debate. You are ego-maniacal and you obviously cant take opinions from others (if they don't suit your ego) .

Call me any name you want..But at the end of the day, Neanderpaul, in my world, Your just a sideman with an unrequited need to set your self apart from your banal, middle class back drop ...Politely stated.. You are a Rebel without a real cause .

I'm done here.

This is why I bucked up to you and called you out. You are wrong. Simply put I cannot have "mechanical only talent" if I have never had a lesson and I can't read music. My only understanding of music is emotion. That makes you wrong. I have gotten plenty of constructive criticism from people here and never reacted like this. I had to call you out and stand up for myself because of the garbage you are slinging.

Sideman? I'm pretty sure there needs to be at least another person involved my music for me to be a sideman.

Middle class? Seriously? Like that's a bad thing. Nancy, I am living the dream.

I passed on a review of one of your song critique posts as I didn't have anything nice to say. I was baffled actually.

So did you like what Tom Hanks had to say about this?

Tom Hanks?????

Dont you mean Ron White? "You cant fix stupid!"

Not that it matters, but I consider anyone that spends a little time learning to play any instrument a musician.

We all come from different angles in what we do musically, so what? Why should that irritate another person unless they are jealous or envious of someone else's talent. I learned a long time ago to appreciate anyone that plays, whether I like what they do or not. Ive actually learned a lot of musical tricks from folks that didnt have any knowledge of music, they just stumbled onto something from trial and error.

As Ive said before many times on here, after seeing NP live, he is one of the most original players Ive ever witnessed, plus hes a really nice guy, explained what all of his equipment did. Just an upright kinda guy.

NP I guess it was 09 when I saw you in Jackson
