What's the gimmick? My CBG? I play it IN SPITE of it's novelty. I play it because I can most easily express myself musically through it. I'm building a guitar now that is more traditional in appearance because of people like you who use their eyes instead of ears to process music. It's a shame really to get that from a musician. I understand it from the musically clueless. Then again...
Paleopete wrote:Say what you want about Neanderpaul using "gimmicks" you can't play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and even kazoo, without being a good musician to begin with, no matter how you put it all together. I can play all those instruments and more myself, and I know what it takes to learn them. How many people on here can play even 2? You have to hand it to Neanderpaul, he's very talented. That's why he was the 1st one I named. Talented to the bone...
Thanks so much Pete. That is very validating.
I risk sounding like a buffoon as I try to defend myself. But so you you know paperdog, I can't read music, I've never had a lesson, and nobody taught me squat about live looping. I am music. Many if not most looping artists simply play a 4 chord progression over the on board beats and noodle for 8 excruciating minutes. I make songs that have the exact structures I want again IN SPITE of the looping format I'm using.

Super validating mister rock star!

PaperDog wrote:Pete, That's a given... There are musicians on this site, , who in my opinion are exceedingly talented, beyond...(and it's a mystery to me why they aren't sweeping the world.) Using gimmicks isn't a bad thing, and NP ranks up there in the talent.. But for me personally, Loopers and cigar box guitars doesn't do it for me. Its great the first 50 times..but after that...
(I don't mean any disrespect to NP... )
Seriously? You think you can say that and not have it taken as disrespectful?
The looping allows me to play full songs with full instrumentation in arrangements I find natural. Others find it so too. I.E. I played a 3 hour show at the Taubman museum of art. An employee was listening but couldn't see me. As I was striking my kit he came up and said "y'all sounded good tonight!" He was dumbfounded when I told him it was just me. That happened because I sound like a band. Not a one man, looping band, but a band.
PaperDog wrote:I can play pretty much anything you throw at me... What I cant do, is play them all at the profssional level and skill that would land me a gig anywhere... (Yet!)
If you are still scrambling at your age to be good enough to play professionally perhaps you need to focus on something else.
Paleopete wrote:I've thought about it before, and I'm really not sure I could do what Neanderpaul does, even though I can play the same instruments, I can do them all separately, as in a multitrack recording situation, but to put it all together the way he does? ummmmm...probably not...
Humbly I thank you Pete.

Paperdog, I'll go ahead and address your tier rating. At 18 I had a professional level front man voice, presence etc. I got paid. In 09 I was offered $900 to play a 1hr 15 minute live looping set. I then proceeded to tour from VA to TX and back. I played 12 shows in 17 days. Stayed in hotels, ate out almost every meal, took my family out to zoos and hotels twice, and came back with cash. An unsigned, unadvertised act with a tour that was in the green. I have turned down offers to be a front man non-stop since I was 18. I have that option. Yet as Kramer guy pointed out. I do exactly what I want. I could make a living singing creed, or brown eyed girl, or Alan Jackson, or almost any country or rock, I choose to be credible in my own mind. It is my artistic gift to me.
By your tier system you must really like Bieber. He makes bank.
PaperDog wrote: I would like to point out, Jimmy Danger has taken Neanderpaul under his wing, and rumor has it they are cooking up something together for fun... NOTE the MENTORSHIP that Jimmy has offered, from his position on the Tier map, respectively. With That, Jimmy (and I mean this sincerely,) My hat is off to you.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Jimmy feels the same way that I do about this one. We are equals. I think his guitar playing and my vocals are very well matched.
One final thought on the matter. Why the change of opinion paperdog?
