Since we're talking of war and Christmas:

Christmas 1980. I'm awakened by a kick and a demand that I get up and present my metal 'dixie' cup. The Sergeant major fills it (!) with rum, we snap to attention and shout, "Her majesty the Queen!" He says Merry CHristmas and on to the next man.

Then we all met in the big marqee tent and really began to party. Food and drinks in abundance. Good cheer with good comrades. Capt Kaufelt (of German extraction) insists I join him in a toast to 3 Panzer div which i do. Then he and I determine that we will show our comrades how to field strip an American .45 auto. We fail. After so much booze we ended up putting the pieces of the weapon in a plastic bag for 'later...'

It was a fine Christmas. And me a military historian - how wonderful to be a participant. It just oozed tradition.

(Three months later we surrendered and the communists took over....)

this Christmas will be a bit more sedate. i'll be ushering for the Christmas day service as we celebrate the birth of Christ and sing carols.

Merry Christmas (and please forgive the nostalgia)

Some of my best Christmas memories (before I was married), were away from "home". I think what makes Christmas stressful, is "family" can be SO critical. I got a phone call yesterday from my brother. I called him the day before to wish him a happy birthday. All went well. Yesterday's call back from him makes me wonder if I will ever speak to him again. I may need to read our constitution again and look for the part that says family have the right to unload the riot act on you. :( I asked him of nothing, and I sure wasn't asking for that. If it weren't for my immediate family, I'd rather go serve food at a shelter than visit what's left of family.

It's the holidays; shields up, phasers set to kill or disintegrate, engines ready to warp out at a moments notice.

I just saw one of my relatives and when no one was looking, I heard very softly over my shoulder "you are a no good, unemployed, dirty, pile of sh*t, musician and you'll never amount to a hill of beans".

I turned, look around and then punched him full on in the gut and said softly, "at least you've got the musician part right".

I love the idea of the holidays, I just detest the way people act before, during and immediately after, especially one's own "family".
They think they are entitled to do what they want, regardless.

Man, that has to suck.... This year , were doin Xmas dinner at my place... I told everybody to keep their drama down... I am contemplating one tactic, which is to hire a stripper to show up right after everybody is seated at the table... That will redirect the family member hostilities away from the evening......I dunno...I'm thinkin about it,....

A Marine squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an
Iraqi terrorist who was badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite
side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious
state. The Marine was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to
both men, the squad leader asked the injured Marine what had happened.
... The Marine reported, I was heavily armed and moving north along the
highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw
each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road. I yelled
to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scum bag who got
what he deserved. and he yelled back that Barack Obama is a lying,
good-for-nothing, left wing Commie who isn't even an American. So I said
that Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited
lesbian! He retaliated by yelling, Oh yeah? Well, so does Nancy Pelosi!.
And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a
truck hit us.
