It never ceases to amaze me how much ppl talk about this guy who couldn't play an istrument, couldn't face life sober, &, in the end, couldn't face life at all.

For me, he never was much of an impactful or insightful person, & the way he went seemed to bear out that belief.

The thing is Phil, he was in a great deal of pain, something I think you can identify with. When your pain overwhelms you death seems like a way out. I'm not saying it's right, but I do believe that if someone doesn't want to live anymore they should have the right to end it. His death did not increase his greatness one iota, he was not a martyr, just a kid from a trailer park who never found happiness.

Then why celebrate him? He was not great.

Yeah, I've been almost to that point, myself, but you know what? I overcame it. I'd feel a lot better about celebrating that, than to make a big deal out of someone who couldn't or wouldn't make his way through this glorious life.

People seem to make a big deal about Morrisey for the same reasons. Maybe it's cooler to like him because he's not as popular.

Cobain truly changed the direction and face of music... how many can you honestly say that about?

I can think of only Mozart and The Beatles.

I thought he was very good and would like to have seen more but I don't make him to be more than he was. He was at the right place at the right time. There have been plenty in history who have achieved more in a short time; Hendrix was much more influential. But I don't take away what either accomplished just because their lives were cut short.

I agree with that assessment.

Nirvana's second album brought grunge to the masses. It was him that really solidified it as a genre, that would have staying power... a movement within music.

He was not as influential as Hendrix, or Dylan, or The Beatles, true.

But he made a profound impact on the music scene in his own lifetime, and his place in history is secure. He will not be forgotten anytime soon.

I think that is a powerful accomplishment.
