We dodged a bullet on this one. Looks like the snow's gonna miss us, & that, my friends, makes me very happy!!!!

Got away from music for a bit, too many weirdos out there, if you know what I mean.
Finally gave it another chance and am now practicing in a band again. Hopefully this one works out.

As for the snow around here.......been snowing for hours now, but not sticking. I am ready for spring!

We had an absolutely beautiful weekend weatherwise here I saw lots of hummingbirds flying around feeding from a vine I planted for my wife on mothersday about 4 years ago. The vine is called Trumpet Coral Honeysuckle. It is very hardy and blooms even when it is below freezing. I was worried after hurricane Ike came thru I thought for sure it had died we lost a lot of plants here due to the salt water blowing in from the hurricane. It survived and the hummingbirds are very glad it did!

No no no...I'm talking MORELS!!!! The bestest tasting mushrooms for my oh so delicate pallete. No tea with these bad boys. Hell, a few years ago local high end restaurants were paying a LOT of $ for them, & I'm talking up to $30 an lb...but I'll never sell...NEVER! They're that good, folks!

They're also damned hard to find...you need a sharp eye, cuz they blend in so well with the forest litter. Here's some pics od 'em:

We're too far north for them to grow here.

Ppl do grow them in jars, though, I've been told...

We DO have the Amanita Muscaria, aka Fly Agaric...but I tend to shy away from the amanita family of mushrooms. All the other Amanitas are deadly poisonish, I do believe.

The only other ones that grow here naturally are strictly food stuff, as far as I know. I have a cpl field guides, but I don't mess with the ones I'm unsure of. There are some you can eat for years until one day they just kill you, from depositing toxins in your fats & such until it builds up to off you. Kinda like freshwater fish with mercury & stuff...It's nearly impossible to get morels confused with poisonous ones, though, in my area. There are "false morels," some of which are edible, some are not, that grow other places.

I've read that we have several varieties, but I can only differentiate 3 basic types, myself - we have the white ones that come up, 1st, then the black ones, & finally we get what they call "dog peckers" around here, cuz the stems are longer, I guess. The whites are the meatiest, but all 3 taste about the same - GREAT!!!!

It's prolly too early for them, but this warm spell after all the snow we had might bring 'em in early, or give us a longer season. They do well after a lot of snow.

Are you familiar with ramps? They're a wild leek, VERY strong onionish flavor. You can actually tel when someone's been eating too many of them, cuz the reek comes out thier very pores in thier skin. Yummy stuff!

I usually freeze as many of each as I can, cuz the season is so short.

Whenever you hunt for shrooms, you should tap them on the ground to shake out the spores, so more can grow, later. Some ppl don't do that, & it's a dirty crime. it is!

This year I'm gonna transplant some ramps & see how they do.

Here's some info on ramps - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium_tricoccum

We have two types, the white & the red. Both are very very strong. Used sparingly, though, they add a LOT of flavor to any foods. I don't recommend trying them raw, though, cuz they're WAY STRONG!

Did I mention that they have a really strong flavor?

I am only joking about the sylisibin I did them regularly when I was a teenager to old for that now. I have never heard of those Morels though. I do love fried mushrooms, hell I like them just about anyway they are prepared. GOOoood!

Really? I'm not too old yet!

Fun stuff, if you have an evening to waste...

I was at a party a few years ago where some kid did too many, & he was freaking out a bit. If you're ever around that sorta thing, give them some licorice. It helps offset some of the effects. Licorice works well against the effects of the daturas, too, like Jimson Weed. (The over-'shroomage wasn't ever really dangerous, btw, unless there are BP prob's & the like. The daturas, on the other hand are EXTREMELY dangerous!)

Yeah. I love that stuff, too, & almost always have some around. NOT those crappy twizzler thingies, though! REAL licorice that I get from the health food store. It's strong & softer than that crappy candy,

You CAN use anise, but it isn't quite as effective. Licorice also raises your BP slightly, btw...
