I started out singing in church when I was young and anytime I would mess up, my pastor would give me this god awful glare and then he would not let me sing for a few weeks! I would have to audition all over again for the choir. It was like a horrible American Idol lol it scared the bejesus out of me! So I start to literally shake like a scared Chihuahua right befor a show, thats why a shot or a little grass is needed just to take the edge off. Its pretty funny actually, my band gets a kick out of my bad childhood expierences lol

I used to get the same way, more often than not, for similar reasons.
I went another way, though, by being adamant about my on-stage sobriety. Back in the day, when I was starting out, I wouldn't even smoke tobacco on the day of a gig. I wanted to be certain of each & every little thing that was going on.
It was quite distracting...but eventually I found some sort of way to channel that nervous energy into the performance itself. I think that's what saved me from going the way of Hendrix, J Joplin, et al.
Do be careful of your crutches, cuz they can become wheelchairs before you know it...& then gurneys...then caskets...
Not trying to judge, you understand.
I'm having my own problems with the demon tobacco...& trust me it ain't no fun at all...just trying to help

Hey Miggie Lou, another fellow almost Houstonian, don't let the crowd get to you. You have to find your inner muse and just tune them out without having to depend on aids to support you. Don't get me wrong I smoke a little houche a couple of times a year, and drank regularly before I found out I was diabetic a couple of months ago. Believe it or not finding that out was the best thing that ever happened to me. I quit drinking, well maybe every now and then I will have a beer. I have started exersizing again and without all the booze my voice has come back stronger than it has ever been. When I quit smoking cigs, in 1988 my voice gained an octave or two and vocal wise I would put this latest experience with diabetes and my new found health in almost the same catagory. I almost feel like I am 18 again, hey that reminds me of a song LOL. Anyway I just joined up with a new band that has a chick singer they have been playing out your way in Katy maybe you have heard of them a group formaly called Sold As Is now will be called Purple Raven. they play about once a month at some place called Al's Sports Bar. I have been with them about 3 weeks and we are retooling the band with a lot of new songs. We will be ready to play out in a couple of weeks.
I suspect stage fright which is kind of a normal thing in the first few years you start gigging can cause you to not manage your voice well throughout the night or gig duration that was my problem when I first started gigging way back in the late 70's. I listened to the song on your site yesterday and take it from someone who has been doing this music thang a long time, you have got what it takes, YOU GO GIRL! I like your voice and your demo on your site. Don't ever let anyone tell you, you can't sing. You know you can and we know you can so just go with it! I wouldn't worry about any suppliments to help you sing you don't need them. IMHO you just need to get over the stage fright thingy and manage your voice (pace yourself) relax and just enjoy the gift God gave you. The warm up exersize and not coughing are the best advise on here besides mine LOL Peace!

Yea, see, I had done a lot of public demos before. But nothing that would prepare me for playing out.
When I go on stage I take on a kill or be killed attitude.
It's a guitar war you know, I am going to be metally present, walk to the gallows with my eyes open. You get my drift here?
Once I take on that persona of guitarest for NKF not George with the guitar. I can look the crowd in the eyes without fear. Yes, it still takes me a song to get really warmed up, but it's on like donkey kong when I flip on that amp.
YEA BABY !!!!! ROCK N ROLL !!!!!

It is a kill or be killed situation. You have to make up your mind that you are going to slay them all that evening/day/whathaveyou.
Either you are doing well or not doing well, there never is that fine line in the middle.
And to ignore the crowd is a finely honed skill, if you don't have it, I suggest you practice it as at some point everyone finds a random heckler in attendance.

Easy Sans, too much truth is like anything else 'round here, "too much for inquiring minds".
(you know I got a chuckle out of it, though) lol

I have done thousands of performances in my career, not once have I ever been heckled! Maybe the 12 year old is a little clueless as to the ways of the world. Rumor has it, last time capt scott got before an audience, he wet his diaper.
lol Bobdop you give me cause to laugh and then I get another when I read what you write..

BobdoB wrote:You have done THOUSANDS of performances? Is that THOUSANDS of gigs? Or performed THOUSANDS of songs in your career. I checked your profile page, you say you are 37 years old. If you have gigged for twenty years and gigged EVERY DAY that would be 7,300 gigs. Also on your profile page it says you've been playing music for 60 years. Was that in a previous life? Just curious...Capt. Scott wrote:It is a kill or be killed situation. You have to make up your mind that you are going to slay them all that evening/day/whathaveyou.
