Thanks, guys. I hate the flake factor, too. Not a total loss, though. I spent this evening jamming with some guys a local drummer introduced me to, AND the guitarist is even interested in replacing the other one for the acoustic duo! You know what they say; when God closes a door, he opens a window. The drummer is here on bandmix, but I knew him from the local club scene. He was actually the first musican I met when I moved here. Does that still count as a bandmix hookup? :)

From the looks of the ad, he is seeking a country music performer (or at least someone who is country friendly). Respectfully, not everyone is into country. 2 replies out of 31 posts actually sounds about statistically correct if you look at the numbers for popularity of rock, pop, hiphop, alternative, worldbeat, fusion and country.

Success rate, eh?
Well, so far I've hooked up with about 4 bands here.
Didn't work out for various reasons, but mostly because they were full of...uh...you get the idea...

Anyway, I can't afford the membership, so I try to find local people with an email address.
Unfortunately, most that I come across don't seem to have one?

Oh welll...

So, currently I'm just floating around, wondering when I'll find the hot spot in the iron on which to strike.
So far, there's no heat, no iron, and I'm just standing here, hammer held high, looking like an idiot lol... Blegh...

I hope the rest of you are having better luck... :?

Success can happen. :)
Things to consider:
- style of music
- personality conflicts
- talent of all performer(s), (you must consider other peoples opinions, too)
- distance
- goals: yours, & theirs
- is there a plan in effect to accomplish goals, or are the goals merely wishes?
- does everyone have equipment?
- does eveyone have transportation?
- is there someone who always has a 'good' reason to miss practice?
- any 'pharmaceutical' problems? Alcohol problems?
- Do all performers 'want it' bad enough? Anyone lazy?
- does everyone practice on their own time, also, or do they go into each practice session with the same amount of skill level as the last group practice?
.
If you think about it, you can probably add 10 more items to the list, huh?

Although Bandmix offers an upgrade for a fee, it appears that they do not penalize the freebies for listing contact info. That appears to be a generous offer.

My overall impression, after a few weeks here, is that this site is more about meeting and communicating with kindred souls.

I haven't had any luck at finding musicians. I think a lot of it is because I'm cheap and don't buy the full membership and everyone forgets to leave an email other than the bandmix default. I think it would be successful for me if I could actually get in touch with these musicians.

I am still looking. I think it might be more related to the style of music I wanting to play.

Well, yesterday, I took my mother to an open house at an upscale assisted living facility. The entertainment was a man from Jacksonville with a karaoke machine and a microphone decked out in a cowboy hat, black jeans, and a pot belly. He was actually quite amusing! About every other song, when he'd switch CDs, he'd consult with "the band"--"Hey, fellows, do you know how to play . . . .?" Then he'd turn to the audience of half-asleep seniors and say, "Yeah, the band knows that one." And the next song would begin. He did announce at one point that after frustrating experiences of being in real bands he actually makes more money as a one many show. I believe him. My ex-husband and I used to have a two person show and we never had to worry about flaky musicians not showing up for rehearsals, etc., etc. So, if I can't find musicians who want to make money with me, I will do it all myself, since I just bought a souped up electric accordion that has drums, rhythm, and bass on it with the touch of a button, and just keep all the profits for myself.

I've known several people who do the "karaoke band" thing, & do quite well. Some combine the karaoke machine with guitar or keyboard; some just sing. The machine always shows up for practice, never gets drunk at a show, & knows almost every song ever written! Of course, the stage is a bit lonely...

chachaangelina.
You said ". . . if I can't find musicians who want to make money with me, I will do it all myself . . . "

Yeah, I've been toying of the idea of being a 1-man show, too.
But - for a different reason.
I've found several musicians who want to "be in a band with me to make money."
But, my songs are complex and very difficult for most musicians to learn (simple songs bore me) . . . the chord changes & techniques require much more training . . .
I guess many of my songs (evidentaly) contain 'advanced' chordal structures, inducing others to struggle and make many mistakes . . .
I've been jamming regularly w/a couple of guys, and I've tried out a few others
. . . but . . .
I don't hold it against them - we're all friends, just with different levels of experience.
I haven't yet been able to find anyone who lives nearby with the skill level needed, so I may HAVE to go solo . . .
.
And so with me - it's not about the money. My songs put people in a good mood. :) That makes me feel good, spreading a good cheer.
.
Also, many of my songs have emotions in them that I call 'sideways emotions." Not sad, not quite happy - but they sure tug at the listener's emotions . . .
They music brings out ineffable feelings, somewhat nebulous . . . but ultimately positive . . .
I like seeing the various emotions richocheting around my listener's faces . . . :)
So, I guess I'm a musical altruist, destined to be broke. :)
Oops - sorry about the diatribe . . .

Hey, Julie~
You wrote:

You are absolutely right.
And when I read on this site how many of us are seeking and how few say "I just want to collaborate with someone else's idea/songs/band/venture", I think about the state of things in the USA in general. It's hard, if not impossible, to find a help mate.
No, it's not about the $$$$ for any of us, but when I'm offering a regular paycheck and I still can't find a competent collaborator, it's time to roll out the electric one man band accordion.
By the way, I was in St. Augustine over the weekend. Met some nice guys in a blue grass band at the Santa Maria restaurant. They told me there's an open mike jam on Tuesdays but I forget the name of the restaurant. Also, the first Friday of the month is an open jam at the Santa Maria. Maybe I'll go to that one. Maybe I'll see you there?
