You know at this point I have to throw this in....we still haven't heard from Clay Rock himself on the matter.

That's odd.

Personally, Punk and Christian dont go together.

They contradict each other. The other night I saw some documentary about punk rock, cant remember the name. Every artist they interviewed basically said f*** everything. Punk also has that do it yourself mentality to everything, which contradicts being a Christian and handing it all to God.

The more I think about it there is no way to put Punk and Christian together. Its blasphemy to either side isnt it?

Can you imagine approaching Johnny Rotten back in 1976 and asking him to address the Christian prospective on his band The Sex Pistols.

Is this thread just a joke or what?

jw123, yeah, I agree, lol. I think this thread is a joke now, because you know what, it is true, Christian music with a genre is just dumb. First off, it would not be very religious like of a band if they violated all their beliefs by cursing in the songs or using a genre that is inherently known to be filled with wrongs. When I say wrongs I mean how like metal is known to be associated with evil.

Plus, these bands are thrown in the way of temptation all of the time. You cannot tell me that every darn Christian band has a strong enough love of God that they are not going to "stray from the path" even once or twice. I am sorry, all people tend to stray from there religious paths. Actually, you know what, all religious people contridict their beliefs. Not unusual. People say one thing, and do another. That's life.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

If a man says he has no sin he has lied in his heart and the truth is not in him. I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea. All men sin and come short of the glory of God. That's another. So nobody is perfect like you said Guitar Anatomy. However nobody (who is truthful with themselves) thinks they are sinless. I'm still sticking by my guns here. You can play a punk, metal, or rap style of music and sing about ANYTHING you want. While most of the world lives in sin you can be a rebel while singing about living right. And you can sing it against a back drop of whatever style of music that you want. God invented music and you can sing whatever lyrics you want over the music you write (or discover). The bible actually says that straight and narrow is the way to heaven and few there be that find it. Again I'm going from memory so the exact wording may be off. But that's the idea. It's hard to live right and get to heaven. Therefore you are a rebel if you try to say what the bible says. I mean c'mon how politically correct is it to even quote the bible these days? Right here in this thread for instance I'm in the VAST minority on my stance.

Paul

I understand where you are coming from. I have a Christian rock cd of my own, I have played in gospel groups over the years. One of the songs on my player is a CHristian rock song.

My thought is the whole idea of "punk" is anti everything, including religion.

On the other hand a Christian could play punk style material as you put it. So I agree on that point.

I think this is a subject that is about each persons personal beliefs.

Pete Townsend of the Who and drummer Kieth Moon
were world famous for destroying their instruments on stage.
I saw this wreckless abandon on t.v.
The audience was shocked and scared to death as the whaling, moaning
craching screams filled their minds. Now you could destroy a fine and
rare guitar or carfully preserve it. What came first the artistic beauty or
the wreakless abandon? The fine delicate guitar came first.
You could break a guitar for 3 mins. or play the most beautiful song anyone ever heard : Love rain on me by the Who. So, creating a work
of art is a deliberate creative act. God created music through great bands
and inspired musicians. We, as artists, create first and if we wish destroy
later. God creaated the beauty of the world from His basic essence, love.
The smashed and broken Guitar is not from God. The finly tuned instrament is. You could throw paint at a canvas for a million years and
you are not going to get the Mona Lisa. The woman was a singular, deliberate Creative act. We are not playing feedback but we know music
through music theory. We know how to love when we hear it. Stairway to Heaven is still playing. The woman who shines white light and we all know is the Blessed Mother of Christ! Amen

ok .....it looks like we have a "mexican standoff" a brewing....

this always happens when you bring "religion" into any exchange of ideas, this is a "music" site and here we are trying to solve divisions that have always troubled mankind from the very begining of life....

us and them........if your not one of us your one of them.......
if your one of them i have no time for you..........etc

Oh you got that one right, GA...in fact how about that singer from one of the seminal neo-Christian bands "Creed"? What's his name - Scott something? Lately the guy has taken a penchant to booze binges and fits of violence, and also a few visits to the jail. It doesn't look like the Christian tone of the band has done him much good.

Rock and roll is a hedonistic lifestyle by nature. Christianity, even the modern nouveaux oh-so-hip version, still frowns on the extremes of such earthly delights. They just do not mix. Non sequitur in all ways.

Neanderpaul you remind me of an amusing story. It involves the Catholic parents of an artist friend of mine. The father stopped going to mass, and then Confession, years ago. The mother was getting pissed at him and asked him "Why don't you go to church anymore?" His answer was great - "Because I don't do anything wrong!"

*Chuckle* Anyway, I don't believe in sin, because I believe it was basically concocted by the church in the early days as a fear mechanism to control people. On to whether you can play any sort of music, yes you sure can. But as I illustrated earlier, the very sonics of different music styles can have a brutal effect on the "message" of a given philosophy. The sonic assault inherent in metal, thrash, punk is simply anathema to the Christian message, anyway you look at it. Some things simply don't work in practice. In theory, its fair to try and put on a mosh pit concert at an old folks home; but in reality, brittle bones and oxygen tanks just don't jibe with the mosh pit experience. It is a non sequitur.

Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism and a large part of the Protestant movement, was a Bible scholar. And he said that being a rebel was being an enemy of God. So as you can see, this largely gets down to one's own interpration of the Bible. Thay's not my beef here. But I am saying that the energy involved in the metal/thrash/punk/rap styles is like antimatter to the Christian message, and the social context to what it has become in our society and many others around the world.

Scott Stapp, evilist human alive, lol. Talk about not practicing what he preaches. That pisses me off royally. "God said to be this way!" Then the same person who says that does something to contradict their own statement. It is not right. I believe in abiding by what you preach.

Look at POD, look at Creed, both supposed to be Christian rock bands. Someone I knew was bloody moshing to POD in the audience... So... Go ahead, tell me "God" said to mosh to your hearts desire, because nothing is a bite out of Heaven like slamming each other bodies until you cannot breathe and bleeding all over the place, and breaking bones, and hurting innocent people in the audience, etc...

Come on, give me a break. I will say it again, I mean no offense, but we all have to admit it is just sacrilege when people do that kind of crap. If you say something, stick to it. "Don't judge a man by his words, but by his deeds."

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.
