I'll chime in here on this one.

IMO an accomplished bassist uses his/her fingers. I say this because it is a technique that is difficult to master. It also allows the player more diversity and a greateer sense of "feel" to come through in the playing. You can't strike two+ notes/strings in unison with a pick.

IMO it just makes for a better all around player and another tool the player can use to his/her benfit.

Learn it all.

I was always amazed at watching videos of the bass player for 'The Who'. He passed away a couple of years ago. Almost impossible for me to copy his bass lines to the T, with a pick. We Wont Be Fooled Again, Is one of my favorite tunes. And the drummer is Killer in this song also.

Generally, the mind is the only thing that limits your playing.

Heart, Soul and Creativity are the real tools. Plectrums and/or fingers are simply a means to an end.

groovemachine, when you said, "Generally, the mind is the only thing that limits your playing. . . . Heart, Soul and Creativity are the real tools. . . " - you brought a smile to my face.
Well - spoken.

I play with a pick, my fingers and slap. Learning to to this in variation with a song or even a riff can really change the dynamic of the song. The only way playing with a pick can limit someones playing is if that player decided thats the only way they will play.

Some times you need a pick, I played one month every day and sometime my hands were so raw I just couldn't play some notes right with my busted ass hands.
