Johnny, you're not a poser either. You're doing exactly what you want to do. I think of a poser as someone who claims to be a pro but really doesn't make a living from playing music. All gig money goes back into the band for us.

and my definition of a poser is simpler yet. anyone pretending to be more than they are.

yeah...there are parameters that define being a "pro" more accurately than this ....but i consider anyone who plays at a certain skill level, conducts themselves appropriately on stage (or on parking lot asphalt at a farmer's mkt gig), has, and shows respect for the gig they're playing, and acts accordingly... i see them as "pros".

That's exactly what I'm saying. When someone's profile says they are looking for X, and you come by and offer them X, some sort of reply is warranted just as a matter of courtesy.

I get that it's a needle in a haystack lots of times, but isn't communication one of the basic building blocks to success in any of life's worthwhile endeavors?

One more thought - nothing ventured, nothing gained, you really can't tell anything about anybody without meeting them in the flesh. All this site is supposed to do is throw out a chance, if you are here, and pay a monthly fee, take some chances!

Many professors come to mind...and yet...they get paid for that... SO. they are both poser and a professional. It happens!...

Exactly. Big talk little show. But I always thought of bikers when the term posers comes up. They haul their bikes to rallys and off load them a few miles from town. Then they don their leathers and ride into town trying to give the impression that they have ridden hundreds of miles to get there. A lot of that goes on at the Sturgis rally and races every year.

I remember in the 80's, it's what you called bands like milli-vanilli, debbie gibson, tiffany, etc.. pop stars who didn't write their own material.

I guess slang even then partly shaped the meanings of different terms.

k-guy, i recall you recently mentioning that you enjoy current country music. so, using that yardstick to measure poseritudiness....i have to ask, how many of THOSE artists write their own material?

I for one would welcome the return of the days of professional songwriters. Most original music is pathetic, trite and a thinly-veiled retread of something better. Not you guys of course.

I know what you mean but there is another side to it as well - your real far out types like Iggy and Alice and Bowie - somehow I think writing them a song could be a real adventure!

I think perhaps the "professional song writers" are the ones responsible for the trite crap in pop music today.

You don't really want to be a professional songwriter. Do you know the difference between a professional songwriter and a large pepperoni pizza? The pizza can feed a family of four. The songwriter just delivered the pie.

They are typically the only ones who make less $$ than professional musicians. One in 10 million has real talent, writes regular hits and makes decent money but they have usually been at it for 10 years or more. A long hard road.

"Pro's" want to tour and constantly build on their carrers
Hobbyists want to play local and without the stresses of touring/recording/constant "practice at home" in order to "rehearse" with the band.

"You" are looking for hobbyists

"I" am looking for pro's


Good luck! and heed the warning of Craigs List. Use it, but do so wisely.

P.S. i am in no way ragging on hobbyists. it's just an apples n oranges thing!

EVerybody here on BM has the full capability to write hits. In fact , yall could be just a good as the beatles were... HOWEVER... Today, no such audiences exist to let you realize your full potentials.. Today's audiences SUCK...end of story. We are given over to mythical beliefs that we must 'always' give audiences what they want...(That works for 9 to fiver types of musicians)... But, sometimes you have to give them what they need...like a big , hearty 'f**k YOU..this is what I bring to the table...Either love it or eat sh*t and die"... Not too many musicians have the huevos to stand up like that... It aint easy...

Ted, don't you get tired of driving and flying all around the world ? I know it is costly to live out of a bus or semi-truck..taking showers at truck stops and all.. do you guys have one of those big RV's or how does that work? bet the gas mileage is horrible..

Well it does wear me out but I don't get tired of it, because I'm an adventure junkie. Just last week I was in Toronto, Manhattan, Houston, and ended at home in Dallas for 5 days for the first time since January 3rd.

I would NEVER, repeat NEVER, take a shower at a truck stop. I travel solo in a 15 passenger bus. If the temperature is between 55 and 73, I will look for a beautiful place to park that van and blow up a queen sized mattress inside. Build a campfire, go hiking, write songs and sing to the coyotes. I get to do that about twice a month between April and October.

But no, I live in hotels provided by the venue. I don't stay in people's homes unless I know them and want to do that. Half the nights of a year I don't know where I'm sleeping until it's time to sleep. Hotels.com and hotwire are my best friends.

Used to fly everywhere but airline baggage fees and TSA make it the most stressful thing I could do now. I'd prefer driving cross-country to flying ANYDAY if there is time for it.
