I've been torn on this topic for years... I hate criminals. But I've seen or read so many stories about people wrongfully accused, taken to trial, and convicted because of shoddy defense lawyers, overzealous prosecutors and power-hungry judges... And years later something clears them (a confession by the real culprit, DNA evidence, etc.).
Our justice system isn't perfect. We put innocent people behind bars. I'd feel worse if we executed them...
I've got no problem electrocuting the 3-strikes offenders. But sentencing a guy to death on the first offense... Scary.
I mean - imagine if that was you. Imagine if, through some strange circumstance, you fit the description of the killer, and a whole boatload of circumstantial evidence pointed to you - just out of coincidence! Would you feel differently about capital punishment then?
