jimmydanger wrote:After posting a list of bands rarely mentioned around here I had hopes for you. But then after ranting that you don't want to do cliche material you go and say that Duran Duran and Van Halen were musically the two most important to you? I will list your influences in order of importance to me:

I could go into length but I won't just now. But Duran are one of the best groups to come out ever. And they were hardly cliched, though many would disagree I would say that at times they were less cliched than Japan who ripped off Roxy Music quite frequently. Halen, the DLR years were genius on many levels. The humour for one.

Just my 2 cents. Most folks into Sabbath and Maiden are not going to care much for Duran Duran and Kate Bush.

I know that too well. But I do remember a group that had Duran and Sabbath as their primary influence.

And there's one guy who's fave bands are Halen and Duran, unfortunately he's a famous musician.

I have narrowed it down to those two bands at the core...

I forgot to mention I'm a jazz fan but that influence will have to wait...

I have a question - if you're advertising for this kinda group, can you actually play &/or sing your parts on the material? I'd think I would start there before advertising.

If I answered your ad, & found that you couldn't, you'd look like a wannabe time waster to me, & I'd run for the hills instead of giving you any chance at all.

My advice - 1 ) start working on your self-proclaimed questionable abilities. 2 ) try to start a band that compliments your present abilities, & allows you to contribute with your best efforts. 3 ) work on improving your skills daily until you can do what you'd like to do, & hope your band can evolve along with you.

So far, this looks like a pipe dream to me. Put down the pipe & pick up your axe & get to work!

I've openly said I don't have the abilities to play that stuff.

I am working on it though. Having like minded people around will be a huge motivating factor to improve.

Getting the right people is highly important so I don't want to put that off till I'm able to play well.

I believe I covered that scenario.

Who's gonna wanna work with someone who doesn't have tha chops? It's too time-consuming. If you're looking for someone to teach you, advertise for a teacher, not a band.

Suppose you find this great batch of top-notch musicians, & got them all together for your project. Once they hear you, they'll dump you, steal your idea & run with it, & you'll be back to square one.

Learn your stuff, man. THEN go for that big brass ring. You're putting the cart before the horse, & we all know that just won't go anywhere.

I understand what you're saying. I'm just trying to do both simultaneously. I don't having a concret musical idea set up so there's nothing to steal at present. Besides someone who likes the bands I mentioned is a rarity to begin with.

If I went to a tutor I could be up and running in a few months. My playing standard at present is: I could about manage Sabbath's war pigs on guitar and on bass the intro to Maiden's Blood on the world's hands. And Rio and some other Duran tunes.

Then you know what to do.

Would you apply for a high-level job in a nuclear plant when you're in your 1st semester at college? If you did, I'd call you a nutcase.

This is the same situation, far as I can tell.

If you are going to try and lead a band, you better know your sh*t!

Whatever that may be, your mix of songs isnt that weird to me. Im like Jimmy I listen to a huge variety of music. Ive played jazz, metal, funk, blues, punk, gospel, raggae, and although I hate to admit it a little bit of country. But I was able to put the music across. Meaning I had the chops to back up what I wanted to do or was able to jump in with the people I was trying to play with. If you are a younger player you might find other young players who want to develop their playing, but I think that you need to do your homework or you are just going to be a train wreck.

Do you really need us to start berating you?

Do you realize how badly this thread FAILED the 1st time around?

Do you know your parts yet?

Do you have any equipment?

Do you have the ability to at least sing?

Do you have a car?

Do you have health insurance?

Do you have any idea how silly this looks?

Do you care?

Do you have a clue?

Do you have a paddle, & the ability to paddle yourself upstream?

Do you REALLY know what time it is?

Do you have a workable plan?

Do you have the ability to follow it through?

Do you have control of your faculties?

Do you know what that means?

Do you REALLY think we should shive a git, after the way you took to our advice in the past?

Do you still have that pipe in your hand?

DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS?

DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS? DO YOU HAVE THE CHOPS?

If the answer to most of these questions is "no," please refer to our previous posts, & go back to your drawing board...
