Yeah, see, I'm not really interested in the pro studio angle.

I want something that I can use for myself as much as for the band. I mean, we're a cover band - we just need a CD of a couple songs so people have an idea of what we sound like so we can book certain gigs. We're not an originals band trying to get a record deal.

I've got all sorts of personal ideas that I'd like to get down when they hit me; writing the stuff out by hand on paper drives me nuts and I usually lose something in the process (like a specific strumming pattern, or a particular timing feel). I want something I can record with that sounds good and will allow me to capture my ideas, and then later on compose those ideas into complete songs.

I appreciate the hardware suggestions guys. I'm definitely going to be looking into some of those devices to see if they fit my needs and budget.

For idea gathering I love my little Zoom H2 recorder. It's not studio quality or anything but you can hear what you did and use it for practice and the like. It comes to all my band practices, and records every single take we do so we have something to listen to later if we really nailed something, or screwed it up for that matter. Just stick it in the middle of the room and bam instant recording.
