Sentient Paradox, didn't Rare Earth have 1 hit ?

Sentient Paradox wrote:Actually, you might be surprised, if you listened to a lot of radio (especially FM AOR [album oriented rock] stations), during the seventies, you would likely recognize quite a lot of Rare Earth stuff.

A lot of them were covers, but a lot weren't too. Even the covers were great though. They made every song their own, and even did multiple versions of some, all of which were fantastic.

I honestly couldn't tell you where any of them were on the charts at the time.

Here's a partial list:

Good Time Sally
Get Ready (cover of the Temptations huge hit - the RE version famous for a really long and awesome drum solo. The song is one side of an album.)
Magic Key
In Bed
Tobacco Road
I'm Losing You (yeah, the same one done by The Faces [Rod Stewart])
Smiling Faces
Born to Wander
Feelin' Alright (same song Joe Cocker did even better with)
I Just Want to Celebrate
Chained

If you file share though (shshshshsh!), there's a ton of stuff out their being credited to them they never did.

Play that Funky Music (Average White Band, NOT Rare Earth!)
Earth Angel (The Penguins [?] don't think RE ever did this)
War (Edwin Starr, NOT Rare Earth)

There's more ridiculous claims attributed to them. I think that's probably the worst damage being done by file sharing. Too many people who don't know s--t about what they listen to screwing up history with their oh-so wisdom inspired file tags.

But that's a subject for another thread I have no intention of starting.

Anyway, to answer your question, I never read the charts back then, or ever, but I'm pretty confident they had a lot more than one. A lot more!

But hey, I never read the charts, and never paid any attention to whether what I did listen to was on them, so what the hell do I know, eh?

Yeah, I remember "I Just Wanna Celebrate"." Play That Funky Music" originally done be Wild Cherry of Ohio. Yeah, Edwin Star, did "War" and I believe,He wrote it although I am not positive about that.

Sentient, chill. I was just making conversation. I thought that I was the only member here that even heard of probably the only White group to record for Motown. I am even willing to wager that you and I are the only ones with a clue to who they are...although I could be wrong. It's all good.

Well, I'm stymied. I woulda sworn "Play That Funky Music" was AWB...LOL

Drummer I worked with for years was Rare Earth fanatic. He's got pics of himself shaking their hands, sitting in, drinking beers with them, etc.

I remember when their version of "Get Ready" came out. I was a teenager, & I'd wake up inexplicably around midnight or so, & when I went into the kitchen I'd turn on that cheesy lil radio to my fave AM station, & they'd play the entire 21+ minute recording. I thought it was the coolest thing since In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, & WAY funkier. Being a live version also amped up the whole feel of it, too.

Of course, when I hear it now it just seems so dated, & the solos aren't nearly as exciting, but that's just cuz I'm such a jaded musician. Sorta sad, ain't it? I still love the song, though. I'd love to do it sometime.
