I think you are only as old as you feel, but when it comes to music I prefer playing with folks within 10 yrs of my age either way. Why? Cause we share a common musical heritage and have a basis for a musical relationship.

I"ve played with ppl from their teens through to their '80's.

I was in a band that had this 88 year old washboard player, doing hippie jam band stuff. I know it sounds strange, but he was good, & added to the experience in many ways. He always had a pot stem in his mouth, though. I thought that was hilarious. He was the gentlest man I ever met, & I named one of my pugs after him, cuz he's got a wrinkly lil black face, big bulging bloodshot eyes, he loves everybody & ain't askeered of NUTHIN!!! Just like old Percy. Loved that man, & always introduced him as my dad.

He told me that at one time he had been Satchmo's official joint roller. It seems that Louie Armstrong would hire ppl to do just about anything, & pay them very well, back in the days when blacks had a tough time getting good work.

You just don't get that kind of history from the younger ppl.

I'm glad to have had that experience.

Now on the other side of the coin, this gig I have Fri nite is with a 26 yr old drummer named...are you ready for this...."Blinky." He is a skinny lil guy with long thick dark brown dreadlocks & these Buddy Holly glasses, & he plays very very well. I'm looking forward to working with him.

Anyway, point is age was / is irrelivent.

Yeah, age 'can' be irrelevant. The gig I just played, two of the guys were under 20, the rest mid to late 30's. We got along great.

The only time it kinda bothers me is when my dentures fall out on stage once in a while when I play the axe with my teeth! Makes for a good show though...

Hey Crip! That happened to a guy that fronted that punkish band I was in - Rusty Spike & the Warheads! We were playing at this bar. He screamed real loud & out popped his dentures onto the dance floor. He jumped off stage to find them while we kept playing. I never laughed so hard on a stage in my life, but he was kinda embarassed. Fortunately, he found them before they got stepped on, popped them back in, & finished the song on the dance floor. Nobody really knew what had happened. They thought he was just being weird, crawling around on the floor. He pulled it off pretty well.

I think I was the only one who actually saw them fall out. The rest of the guys just looked at him kinda puzzled.

We werent noticed when we were younger, but now, we can get a show every friday night, saturday too, if my voice will hold up for it.
Make sure the place you play at host your type of music.

Im not going into a coffee house and playing my music, ppl would die. I have to go to a place that host us, which is usually outside or something.

Your only 2 years older then me, so you shouldnt have much of a problem until you get in your 40s, or later. But hell, even 70s bands still play.

YEAH BEWARE of the 40s'..ooohhh.. Hells bells its an I opener all right ...Hair loss, prostate probs, vision probs, things ache that didnt ache before, hair in places it wasnt before , and really dont belong..DHT goes up , Ball fluid goes down.. ...Yep, your headin down the backside now..Naps before gigs manditory now!!...OH...you meant in MUSIC ? ,OOOOHH..Nope no problem there.. The 70's are alive and well HERE in BFE...

USE IT OR LOSE IT. I,ve trained with 70+ year old Kung Fu Masters from China. Vibrant and alive were they! Wore my young arse out without ever getting short of breath. Music? Live it loud!

No now dammit, not me..IM an exception I WANTED to play with old bastages..In 77, heres how my ad would have read on here..Young drummer with 4 yrs stage exp. seeks band in the 30-55 age range...

Old is a state of mind imo, i can't do everything i used to due to time and injuries but i can still play.
I damn sure don't have "the look" that people seem to be so hung up on nowadays; can't say i really want it either...if i needed to costume up to gig that would be no problem (to a point)...what's that song? "What you see is what you get"...beyond that you can take me one of three ways: Son of Man
Son of God
or a Son of a Bitch.

When I play out, I don't need a 'costume' to impress people. I put on clean clothes. . . . regular clothes, with no patches or holes.
If they don't like it - TS.
When I walk on stage I'm usually one of the oldest ones there, and so they're not impressed with my appearance,. And I don't give a crap.
Once I start playing that all changes, anyway . . .

I suppose I could buy leathers & chains to impress them, or maybe buy the latest fashions. Hmm, how about hip boots - yeah - right . . .
I'm not so insecure with my music that I feel any need to impress my audience with broadway costumes, to make up for it . . .
. . . that's just not me, anyway . . .
Screw all that crap - 'dress this way for this crowd, dress that way for the other crowd' . . . .
Screw it - I'll dress for me, not for them.
And - you know what?
When folks come up to me after I play, they're always talking about the music and me - but never my clothes . . .
So even the fans think the miusic is what it's all about . . .

Instead of me wanting to dress up like musicians with 1/3 my experience, I think they should dress like me.

hey rhythmman, you can always walk out onto stage in a dress. That'll get their attention. You can even wear a nice clean one with no holes

all kidding aside though... we live 2 generations past the MTV revolution, "image" will forever be a part of music.. remember "grunge"? The image of angst against image... sigh.
