Well, Craig Maxim, that all makes perfect sense to me... Basically you (and everybody) are speaking colloquially. Evolution of the English language - it's all just words and sounds leaving the mouth anyway (for communication - like you said). If alot were in the dictionary at least we'd be making MySpace kids sound more intelligent haha...

"I get that a lot"
That's not an adjective.. it's an adverb. And it's spelled "a lot," with a space.
It's a common mistake. Still doesn't make it right

Check out Webster's page, just to put your mind at ease:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alot
When you search "alot," it redirects you to "lot." Makes sense, eh?

Okay we're completely off-topic. Why are we not making fun of the dude's lack of punctuation and coherence? :D

Read the whole thread. I addressed this already.

Once again, I already explained what the definition of "lot" is. And no, it does not always make sense, in popular usage. As when "a lot" is used at THE END of a sentence...

"I get that a lot."

While it is unlikely you will find it in the New York Times, you will find, numerous newspapers using the term as a single word... "alot". It is in common usage, and should be included in reference works to reflect this. The phrase "a lot" means a number. It is a noun. But MANY, if not MOST, people in this country have come to use the term as an adverb... a substitute for "often". Humans created the languages we use, and when humans alter how that language is used, it is our prerogative to do so, and there is nothing wrong with a reference work reflecting this change. Language is fluid and evolves. Otherwise we would all be speaking the Queen's language of centuries past. And while it may be beautiful and elegant, our society is much speedier than it used to be, and the language is shorter and to the point in order to accommodate this reality.

LOL

Karma. I am paying for pointing out the fallacy of his claims.
