Hey Joe... (not often I get to say that and not sing it. LOL)

With gas prices as they are, more money is a definite plus! Maybe this will work out, and maybe you will be the focal point to help them accomplish even more! I have only the best hopes for you brother!

And the guys will get better at singing and playing at the same time, if you force them to do it on every practice, and at home on their own too, even if just back-ups here and there. Repetition is the key. They CAN do both, and learn to do it well. Even now, some of my rhythm guitar playing is pretty syncopated or complex, and I have to play things over and over to sing when I am playing something really off-beat. It took me about 5 times through the song, maybe more, to get used to playing Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on keyboard, and sing it at the same time.

Boys I can tell you exactly why he's a doin it. He can feel the vibe! Maybe it aint the best yet, but I can tell he can feel it. It shows in the words he uses. As a hack amiture who is constantly trying to push through the fog myself. I applaud what you are doing Joseph. I totally understand Craigs point of view. But like I said before, a room full of awsome musicians dont make a "BAND".

Believe me, I've spent a lot of time flailing around in that fog, too. This one is going to be a lot of work, but I can definitely see some possibilities. Thanks again for all the input, guys. :D

Joseph

I've said it before and I'll say it again,"Every ones trip is different".

As much as I respect Craig and Philby's opinions, I don't think you should be discouraged from playing with these cats. There's always a chance a great sound will come of it, so if it feels right, DO IT!

As far as "Born To Be Wild" goes, I'd work up a version. It's always a fun song to play and I you ever find yourself gigin' in a biker bar and you don't know it, it could have dire implications!

Playing is a good thing so go into it with a positive attitude.

As far as repertoire, I'd suggest,

Friend of the Devil (there's always a Dead-Head in the crowd)

louie louie (people still seem to like it and you can jam out on it)

As much as I disdain booze at practice, it might not be a bad idea for you to get a case, get together and just jam out on what comes to mind without putting to much thought into it, run a recorder, and see what comes out. Chances are you will conjure up a couple of sets in no time. You can sober up and tighten up the tunes another day.

Rock On!

Craig said,
(snip).. How cool would it be to have an annual Bandmix Jamfest? So many talented people on here, and different styles. It would be awesome as hell to see everyone together in one venue, just lettin' loose![/quote]

GREAT IDEA! :D

If I ever get my new house built, we can have it at my place! There's a beer distributor within walking distance and Y'all can camp in the woods.(got 11 acres of prime wetlands, so you would have to bring skeeter repellent). I'd love to jam with all you folks so we should make it a three day affair.

Hope to see yas later!

Disregard all the 'Monkees' suggestions, for the love of all thats holy.
Other than that, go for it!
Players can always get better, but dependability and a good vibe are hard to find. As long as the other members musicianship isn't so far below yours that it drags you down and bums ya out, I don't see how this project could be a bad thing.

Um...HJ? Where did I discourge him? Not only was I telling him to go for it, I was defending his decision to do so. Read the posts, man!

I would do it for the great vocals alome, since, in most ppl's minds, the vox make the band.

HJ, lemme know when you get yer house built...I'm comin' to jam!!!!

Zip - nuttin wrong with Monkees. They played happy lively stuff that was/is popular, & "Steppin' Stone" could definitely be rocked up & jammed to a bit, but prolly not to the point of being metal.

Hey Joe! Why doncha do "Hey Joe?"

Stickshifts & Safetybelts - Cake (it's new but it's easy & audiences love it)

London Calling &/or Train In Vain- Clash

It's the Same Old Song &/or I Cn't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honeybunch) &/or Walk Away Renee - 4 Tops

Brown Eyed Girl / Domino / Moondance - Van Morrison

Money (That's What I Want) - Beatles

Lola - Kinks

Joeseph you probably need to sit down with these guys and see what they are familiar with and go from there, It seems all of us as musicians have some sort of core group of songs we can relate too and play with conviction. Oldies but goodies are great to me cause you can play them however you want. It seems the newer the song the more note for note that most audiences want to hear them. Playing the festival circuit is a whole different world than what Im familiar with. I would think that audiences would want to hear more originality than what Im familiar with.

Good Luck

You should do 'Jesses Girl' -- Rick Springfield (1981).
That song KILLS.

A little less in the wheel house of 70's to early 80's, but a good one that can be metalized (or rocked up) is 'Voices Carry' -- Till Tuesday (1985).
Just flip the gender around.
"Oh there must be something shes thinking of, to tear her away. When I tell her that Im falling in love, why does she say" etc.
The song was originally sung to a woman anywho, but the record company made them change it to being sung to a man.

Wow! This is some great stuff! Philby, once upon a time, I thought about making "Hey Joe" a kind of signature song...but I thought it may creep people out a little!
"This guys talking to himself and singing about killing people....RUN!"

I love so many of the songs you guys have mentioned, and kind of like jw123 said, I'm sitting down with them and going through material that they are familiar with. Some of it is really good, and some of it has to go. After getting down the basic cover sets, we are going to work on some original ideas. That's a big reason why I'm there: They know me predominantly as a songwriter, and I feel secure in saying that I am going to have a MASSIVE amount of input when we hit that phase.

Now who's gonna get going in organizing this big annual jam session/camping trip? I'm ready to go! There are a lot of people on here that I want to meet in person (and play music with, of course!)
