I don't know what a set of (good) tubes coast for an HRD these days, or if you could just replace the 6L6s. My old Bandmaster head had 25-year old tubes (at least!) when I sold it, the sound was muddy and not too loud - I'm sure those 6L6s needed replacing, but the rest of the tubes probably did too.
With the 'upside down' design of the Fender amps (tubes suspended from the chassis), the heat used to rise right up into the sockets and cook everything in my Bandmaster - I drilled out a hole in the front panel and installed a box fan to help it.
Before I sold the amp ('as is'), I priced out a full set of tubes at close to $200! I used to buy replacement 6L6s at Radio Shack for about $6 each - remember when they had a 'tube tester' in every store?
The whole amp plus Bassman-size 2x12 cabinet cost me $250 back in the late 70s!

About $40 for a decent matched pair of 6L6, $80 for a full set. I typically get 5-10 years on a set of modern day power tubes in a Fender amp. My 64 Super Reverb still has a set of RCAs that are at least 40 yrs old and test great.

Test and replace as needed.

I've seen people go for certain 'Russian' tubes for much bigger bucks. I had an old spare 6L6 I found in a gear box long after I'd sold my Bandmaster. Don't remember what brand it was, but I got $35 for it on ebay!

amp arrived yesterday around 5:30 PM fedex..from sweetwater.. and what an amp!..if you like overdriven tone then with this amp you do not need a pedal.. like the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe clean shimmering tone better,, but cleans on this Marshall pass the mustard..today will hook up my BOSS chorus pedal and will decide if I want to spend money on a reverb pedal..? the reverb on this is a little weak..anybody have suggestions for a reverb pedal?
