Seems all of the contemporary Jazz players site Hall as a major influence. Scofield claims he was the most 'accessible' among all of the older players (for himself).

Thanks for the reference! Yeah, this cat IS killing it. Very melodic and yeah, killer tone. VG+ stuff!
Tune a double bass in 5ths? Heck, I have trouble enough playing the damn thing in 4ths!!!

I would think you would have to jump around a LOT more w/ that tuning. That's one busy cat!

well, here's the deal.....i PLAY an instr tuned in fifths ALL THE TIME, right? >>> mandolin!

so my brain can get around that part. but man, you have to rethink even the most basic stuff...like how something as simple as a root/fifth bass line just lays....well.....wrong!

the advantage to that 5ths tuning, and why it works so well for instr that are tuned that way is that you actually get a lot more notes crammed into the same length of say five "frets" as you do w an instr tuned in 4ths.

I love how easily Hall and Mitchell shift gears and trade soloing/comping hats! and when Hall turns off his amp volume and he just chugs along w that old school tone.....and THEN brings it back to his gorgeous elec tone.....yeah, baybee!

Here's Bill w/ Cuong Vu & this gets pretty 'out' @ times but you have to listen to this bass player, man.
Bill is pulling out the delays & ring modulator for this one for a very wild soundscape.

Again, check out the bass player, here.
