One thing I always look @ (especially playing live)- the tonic.
I NEVER put 2 songs back to back in the same key.
Then it starts sounding like Ted Nugent!!

One exception here would be a medley or a concept album.
Believe me, this is the biggest problem I face when putting together a release.
Anything long goes to the end. Wacky stuff gets separated by more 'conforming' tunes.

It used to be so easy to pick a song for the B side of a 45.

Jook - good point about the song's key/tonic. Also similar starting 'sounds (i.e. acoustic guitar by itself, or a drumstick countdown) are things I've noted already - I had 2 songs that started with the stick 4/4 count, so edited it out on one of them.
