I'm trying to see where Mark ever told you to shut up, ted..... Nope, not here .... He asked you to take your non-music-related whining over to the non-music section of these forums.

Back to the subject ... HOW are 'music people getting dumber online'?

What was that quote attributed (erroneously) to HST? 'The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.' (For those who actually have Generation of Swine (I do), you know that's not exactly what he said, but it's still relevant.)

I did the math, and as it turns out, Paul McCartney was wrong: there actually are far too many "silly love songs." Maybe the question should really be: Why are non-musicians getting dumber as a general proposition? Is it because they rely on SM to tell them what constitutes good music?

Btw, as a retired prof. who taught at one of the largest universities in the country, I have specific insights into the challenges of education, and ascribing any real or imagined ills specifically to the NEA is yet another shining example of the human predilection to blame someone--esp. when said humans are largely uninformed on a particular subject. Anyone who has devoted significant research into the matter knows it's a very complex issue that touches on a number of factors. If anyone would like to discuss this, the Non-Music forum would be the appropriate venue--as P-guy notes. But I've noticed that arguments there are typically 'won' by the loudest, most insulting and most offensive; ergo, I'll stay here and talk music.

What is the REAL Hunter Thompson quote??

When I see you, I'mma smack you for asking me that (just kidding), cause you made me pull out the book and find the page. But it was nearby (was reading it the other day for some reason), and I knew the page (43). It was actually in reference to the TV business:

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."

Btw, been seeing the coverage of the floods over there. Hope you're far away from the deluge.

Google still works like it ever did.

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.”

I say it's the way mtv turned video editing into an assault on the attention span of every young American for the last 3 plus decades. But you decide for yourself.

I believe the title of this thread is 'Do you notice that music people are getting dumber online?'

I have a simple answer to this one, Eve. It's because music is getting dumber. The industry has always been pretty dumb IMO. That's why I like Indie artists.

And music education was taken out of the national curriculum by....who? (Starts with an "N", ends with an "A", has an "E" in the middle)

When all people are dumbed down, the "music people" are included. But y'all keep acting like you can't see, and I'll keep acting like it ain't obvious to the average simpleton.

As usual DP, you speak words of wisdom. And as someone who also was in the education racket....i know firsthand that it's not as simple as blaming the NEA, Obama, failed Democratic policies, or Hillary's pant suits.

I would suggest that anyone so confused educate THEMSELVES before making such off hand and ignorant sweeping generalizations.

That's the last the I have to say in this General Music Forum on the subject of "Dumbed Down Music/Musicians" as it pertains to politics.

Ted, if you wish to continue to blame Obama, Dems/libs, Hillary, and "failed democratic programs" every time you break a string, your milk goes bad, you get a flat tire, or someone dials your number by mistake....go ahead and knock yourself out....

But show some courtesy and respect to the folks who come to this forum to discuss music, and not to be hit over the head by your political views every time you see a convenient moment to take pot shots.

Let's be clear, no one told you to "shut up". And I'm not asking you to now. I'm simply asking you to please take your political sermons, and the axe that you need to continually grind over where they belong....to the sandbox forum. Thank you.

I'm still confused.....who are the "music people" she is talking about?

What is all this musician disses musicians about dissing musicians?

Just who the f.uck made musicians god and judge other musicians and music.

A smart musician will run his show as a business and play mainstream mass appeal to make sh*t loads of money at a early age so he/she can play what ever the f.uck they want when they want.

Regarding Social Media. I was late to that party due to lack of interest. Got involved to pimp my books (See "Red Dirt Zombies" series on Amazon).

However, my wacky group of friends post from places like Thailand, Ecuador, South Africa, UK and even New York and it is very nice to keep in touch - I'd somehow missed that.

The trick is to avoid politics and realize that your opinion means nothing, just do what you came to do and get out.

Dunno if I'd go that far, but there is great value in reading things other than SM. I know it's helped me a great deal. But I also had Sister Elena (and her ruler) for a piano instructor when I was a kid, and I'm not sure how well it would have worked out w/o her (and that ruler). Then there are the times when I read something and say "WTF??" For those moments, it's always good to have someone around who can provide the proper insight.

As far as I can tell, the primary purpose of SM is to monetize the user base, forcing them to be exposed to an endless stream of ads as a captive audience. It's a way to make money w/o actually producing--or even doing--anything, something I find objectionable. But hey, everybody gotta live. And as Talbot notes, there are times when it can be useful (but then, email can be just as effective a way to stay in touch w/ a number of folks across continents). Obviously, SM is very popular among the kids--it gives them the opportunity to be seen by an indeterminately large, anonymous audience, something that seems far more important when we're young. But as you get older, you recognize it's your deeds (or misdeeds) that determine how the world sees you. Yeah, I know, SM is largely responsible for the rise of a certain presidential candidate--but how's that working out now? The SM world is little more than a shadowy mathematical construct...a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
