Bass players are in huge demand because every kid that starts playing guitar thinks it's cooler that they can do riffs on 6 or 7 strings than have to stay on one note for more than a millisecond on 4 or 5 strings.
Then they realize they need a bass player and the "uncool" kid that chose bass now owns them.
In most bands I've played in, the bassists were the best musicians in the band.
