When using Soundcloud just remember 2 things:
1) Only upload full-resolution files (WAV) - if you upload MP3s, then the double compression they get to convert to SC format screws up the sound.
2) Foreign websites steal your tracks and offer them for free/sale in other places - even demoes, and non-music files, they are indiscriminate. And you can never get them taken down, either.

Mike, from soundcloud:

Protecting copyright at SoundCloud

Automated content identification on SoundCloud isn’t new. We implemented it back in 2010. Here’s how it works: when you upload a track, our system checks your upload against a database of tracks that copyright owners have asked us to block. If the system detects a match, then your upload is blocked, because that’s what the copyright owner has asked us to do. We also run the system in the background to make sure that we’re picking up infringing content on an ongoing basis after upload. If we detect a match, the track will be removed.

All kinds of people post to SoundCloud: major labels, indie labels, micro labels, artists, publishers, individual creators, and more. The system is looking out for all of them equally. We don’t choose or prioritize the identifications that the system makes which lead to takedowns. We don’t treat long pieces of content differently from shorter ones. We don’t give labels or anyone else access to the automated system to choose or prioritize the identifications, other than selecting which of their tracks they want blocked, and who (if anyone) should be allowed to upload their work without it being blocked. That means that when it comes to identifying copyright through our automated system, no content is favored over any other.

Dayne, I can record it onto a type II tapes with my 3 head deck and load it on my computer. You couldn't tell the difference side by side. Like Mike was saying, people can record stuff from a website onto a daw. If you out the song online, it can be stolen.
You should check out bandcamp. A band typically puts an album up and only makes one to half the tracks open to listening before purchase. Other bands that are more established put up an enter album to preview before purchase. If I listen to those a couple times, the site will put up a pop up that says "the time has come to open thine wallet".

It's optional of course. Some, I've purchased, some, I kept listening anyway. Others, I set them aside for a while if I know I will purchase, but not a the moment.
I think it's a good system. Haven't been on the artist end of it yet, but I am set up for it, if I want to.

ok, here's another angle, let them steal them, let them put them up on their free Russian music website, but then, who in their right mind will visit the website to listen when they know there's a good chance of that free Russian music website downloading other nefarious code (malware/ adware ) while the listener is listening?.. somebody said here it might be good to have stuff stolen, it proves a artist is creating good enough music to be deemed stealable? a barometer of sorts?.. my take is let them steal them if they must, in the mean time you just might get a job as a studio musician, or hired by Warner Bros. to write tunes for them, so they can supply their signed artists with? .. I would bet those guys are always on the look out for musical talent..maybe not..

Who knows who, if anyone, actually buys from or downloads (some are free) from any of those pirate sites? Plenty of people shared (questionable) files until the Napster blow up. Most hope that their virus software will protect them.

Dayne - the SC copyright thing you posted pertains to people uploading copyrighted material that the "big boys" (like Warner Brothers) have marked - try uploading a Neil Young cover song and see how long it lasts (same thing happens on youtube).
I know my songs from SC were stolen, because I have a radio show I did on there (interview, plus a couple of live songs and a couple of songs from my CDs) - one long file, and I found that on a couple of those pirate sites.

Bandcamp - I don't think you can set a preview to be only part of a song. You can, however, set how many 'free previews' someone can do before they have to buy. The streamed version is a low-res MP3, though, not a full resolution file, which is one of the good things about bandcamp - you can upload WAVs and people can download them or as FLAC, or MP3 if they really prefer them.

Is anyone stealing tunes from here on Bandmix? Probably not - as they tend to be low-res MP3s most times (due to the space limits).
