A 'gig' sounds like something people do with no heart behind it. Its impersonal, cold, and vacant.
A 'show' , on the other hand... even at the Pizzaria, is something a fan can keep a piece of, when they walk away. A gig...that's like an obligation to do a 9 to 5 . A show...that's more exciting and you just never know what to expect. A gig is 'duty' , A show is an indulgence. A gig is a wind down... a show is a build up...

When you go see the red hot Chile Peppers, you don't go to see a gig. You go to see a show.
When you buy a Foo Fighters ticket ...you don't pay for a gig, you pay for a show.

I do the best shows, right at home...in the living room...

A 'gig' is a job.

A 'show' is what the audience sees/hears.

if i understand peg's question....i think she means "how do you refer to
the event" as in do you call it a gig or show?

i'm a gig man. i've never referred to any music event i've ever played as a "show".

when i think "show"....i'm thinking KISS, maybe CATS. or OKLAHOMA.

Yeah, but, even if you're just onstage alone with a guitar you're putting on a show.
You're still in showbusiness.

trust me mike, when i'm sitting on my ass in a restaurant or winery and playing solo jazz and classical gtr music.....that's a GIG! not a show.

now, maybe if i did some sword swallowing, tap dancing, or juggling between songs...THAT would make it a show. 8)

Nooooooo! I can't do that John, it might frighten the ladies.

I probably use gig and show interchangeably with no particular emphasis or importance.

I generally refer to the opportunity to perform as a gig.
The show is what I plan and execute when we get there.
A "full show" would include our fog / lights / and laser applications.
