all these vintage owning
non-playing guitar pickers out there..
crawling all over the clubs and pubs
posing with all the right gear...
now they will be telling me they really can't play but miley cyrus hired them anyway...

in the media business this is called a cartoon...

something similar to a cross-dressing mannequin i suppose.

I never met a decent player that didn't great pieces in his rig
and paid f'n plenty for them vintage or no.
mostly guys who own junk sound like it.

by the way that 66' twin~
I paid $40 for it in a chuck levins parking lot.
go ahead and pay 2500.00 for a new one if you want too,
as most of you have said you couldn't tell the difference anyway.
If i had a tin ear i would buy a crate amp too.

the marshall i built my self
a new handwired version is 3x the price i paid for this.
the cabinet is a mojo with EV 12l's and still is well under marshalls price for a new one.

I really think you people don't know what the f**k your talking about realy.

Well JC, I guess some day you will actually post some tracks here and we will find out if you can really play.... or not. :D

Here is an example of raw talent playing a Strat off the rack through a simple Laney amp:

Now gentlemen, gear is great but you still have to play it.
It does not play itself.

Having said that, I have seen more than a few who get what they need without the aid of vintage gear. The fact remains, they can play what they are using and thus gear alone will not be anyone's end all.

If you can play it, you can do it on a fing pacifica as long as you can get the tones you want for the situation at hand.

There is no autopilot for playing music well. Be good at your craft and if you get a chance to get some nice stuff without taking out a LOAN, go for it.

But reality is if you don't have it in your hands, the best amp/guitar/whatever will not do it for you.

Case in point, my buddy has a silver jubilee head and cab. It's some nice, pretty, great sounding amp he has there. He also recently started to aspire to learn how to play a guitar, but IT DOES NOT PLAY ITSELF>thus he sucks. He may not suck forever but until his hands/head can catch up to his equipment, he's doomed to repeat CAT SCRATCH FEVER/SMOKE ON THE WATER and butcher BACK IN BLACK.

That little girl plays well enough, just not overly fond of what she's playing. And that's all subjective to who you are.

There always will be people better than you and worse than you.
Just let her know not to do SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT and everything is copacetic.

Nope. It is unlikely I will ever play like that cause I don't have the fingers or hubris for it and high-end vintage gear certainly won't get me there. That is the point of the OP I think.

well thats you,

"Here is an example of raw talent playing a Strat off the rack through a simple Laney amp"

should read:
"Here is an example of young talent playing a $2100 signature Strat through a rack mount effects unit into a Laney amp"

she's got talent I'll give that
more than you if you say so.

but it don't confront me.
as the saying goes.

When I was in the Army we were playing
war games and we were captured and held
as prisoners in a train car. It was dark in there
4 or 5 black guys in the train car started beating
on stuff and making all kinds of noises, it was
one of the most kickass jams I've ever heard,
no toys.

I like toys they're cool, but it takes more than
toys.

ROTFLMFAO! Thats some funny sh!t there Jimmy! Texas is full of guy's with SRV hats!

In My Own Very Humble Opinion... That is a very boring "solo" . Very technical from some stand point but even Steve Vai could play that, with 10 hours of practice. Shifts , picking , and positional playing. Easy. Creating something live at the same level,,,, A completely different story.

Now here is a wild question???? The frets on my old Les Paul are so worn that I realize I have almost been playing it as a fretless for the last few years anyway. Should I just file them down and leave them as markers?

I find chords really aren't a problem because triads and power chords don't really require that much to adjust too. I have so many flat spots that I am adjusting to keep right in tune any way and it works really great.

Oh well......

I could make a freakin amp cobbled together by radio shack sound passable with an EQ pedal and OD pedal.
I don't get all the 'brand name', 'vintage', or 'boutique' snobbery.

Get over yourselves...

Why would you care what amp someone decides to get excited about?
that's kinda neurotic, if you think about it.
Smells like bullshit
there is actually a ton of money not to mention notoriety, to be made in the boutique amp business.
if you could do it, which you can't you. would be admired.

It has got nothing to do with worrying about what someone else gets excited about.
It's about their unsolicited opinions on what gear you are using.
I even remember a story that Crip told about some guy harassing him for half the night because he was playing line6 and not marshall.

P.S.

JCP61,
Those Ibanez guitars have no business being in that room, you cretin. You should be ashamed of yourself!

Glen seriously? You find this solo boring? What is your music of preference? obviously it ain't jazz? Are you intimidated? I love you Bro but there is more to music than Steve Via! I love his music! IMO he is too full of himself to play this! He couldn't play what this precious little girl (prodigy) is playing because he can't SLOW DOWN ENOUGH to do it! I watch him and Satch play and I am AMAZED! At the same time I am reminded of the interveiw when Gary Moore said a lot of guitar players can play a thousand notes but they can't play one!
Case and point fast forward the following video to 2:22 this is how you play ONE NOTE!
