I like to drink! One thing I don't do is drink while playing or drive after drinking! That is one of the sacrifice's I make to play in a band! I know the other guys are counting on me to be at the top of my game! If I fail to be able to do my part CONSISTENTLY I know I will be out of a job and looking for another band! This is the way the music business works and any other business for that matter.

Get another drummer; one bad apple can spoil the bunch.
It seems to be past time to stop prostrating yourself and admit defeat.
Only after admitting defeat can you go on to a greater sucess.
You can't get to 2nd base if you keep one foot on first base.

I would tell him that you REALLY want him to be your drummer but because of his actions, he is on indefinite probation. Not allowed at rehearsal until you see signs of improvement in his attitude, and that is expected quickly.
I'd be checking out what else is available in the meantime, so you aren't left stranded and he knows you are serious.
That leaves the door open for him and gives incentive to straighten his life up, without being rejected for personal failures. It also leaves the door open for you to find the right drummer, even if it's him.
Until you have a new drummer there is no reason to "kick him out" if he might be rehabilitated.

Had to fire our second drummer for showing up drunk, it wasn't easy because he had been with the band for seven years and was a good friend. But if you f with my music prepare for the wrath of me.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me seven times, you're frickin fired.
I'll give an example: me.
I was in a band once where my brother played lead guitar. My girlfirend had bailed on me and went off with a surfer. I still hate surfers...
I started drinking.
The band had a meeting, My brother delivered the news: "Kick the jug over or hit the road."
That sorted me out. For while.

There right AV sh#tcan him,
Going thru the same deal with
my drummer, I've been going
thru it for 30 years, cause I'm
stupid. I'm done with him now,
and I've lost a good friend and
a hellacious drummer.
3 piece, I don't know Mr Yod
said once you should be on your
own, I agree, mercenaries can
be controlled. I've been playing
piano 2 years come May, and
I'm thinking of going single.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas
send him down the road

I'd say kick him out...
1) The dude obviously cant handle being professional about it. He need s to grow up.
2) No musicians is soooo good that they have the right to sabotage everybody else's stab at success... He's just disprespectful. No other way to say it.
3) He might have brought good beats to the table... But so will the next guy...

coming through in March, if border patrol doesn't get me in new mexico
It sounded to me like the OP really wanted this drummer to work out.
No matter who you get, there will be compromises to make and things to adjust to.
It is what it is until it isn't
Sorry to make it sound like he came to practice drunk, or ever has, because he has not.
I spoke to him, and told him that we are planning shows for spring and summer so he will need to pull his out out and get some fresh air. He said that he understands but his coaching will come first until it's over (in February) and he avoided the subject about being depressed and stuff.
We understand the coaching thing, not because we didn't come first or anything, but that he was paid a large sum for gas and has an obligation to do it.
I view this as a good time to finish writing the rest of out tracks for this album, and scope out some more drummers in case he defaults. Plus he said he will make a much larger effort to make it to practice, and that the main reason he hasn't showed up is because our guitarist schedule, and mine, don't line up with his very well, as we are busy during the week and he works 12s, fri, sat, sun.
I think it was a nice talk and maybe we got him on board. Either that, or he is aware now that we are considering replacing him. He likes this band and wants to play with us, now he just has too.

Perhaps that is all the motivation he requires.
We all can get over committed and that leads to burn out.
But that's no excuse for his putting innocent peoples lives in danger with his drunk driving.
For that I have no tolerance due to my having seen one too many shattered bodies and lives.

I know that. I can't believe how hard it is not to do something. There can't be anything so important to put your life and other's life in danger just to drive somewhere.
