The only way to conquer that fear is to get out there and do it. The majority of aspiring musicians struggle with the same fears, singers especially because they're the ones under the spot light. But consider how many bands you've gone to see... even if they screw up royally, I doubt you noticed it, unless someone accidentally lit themself on fire - I would call that a memorable moment :)

Fear is self-imposed. You have a good enough voice to get through a set. Just get up there a few times and get it over with. In fact, sing terrible a few times on purpose and grin at the audience like you meant it. No shame in performing.

Best to ya.

I quess what it is boiling down to is confidence and the fact that I feel uncertain of myself and how I will be judged by others. I just wish I didn't care what others think, but unfortunately I do and I am frightened of making a fool of myself. My mother had a fantastic voice but never did anything with it and often regretted it when she was older. I don't want to let the same thing happen with me - that is if I am capable of doing it. I just don't want to miss the opportunity - if there ever is one. I keep on trying to tell myself that the regrets we have are of the things we didn't do or didn't try, rather than the ones we tried - even if we got them wrong.
They have an open mike session nearby, but I don't know anyone who could play for me, plus I'd far rather do it further from home where I can take comfort in a certain amount of anonimity

Thank you all for your time and for taking the trouble to listen and reply :)

Excellent advice, thanks. I am, hopefully, soon to be auditioning so fingers crossed for me that I make it "memorable"

I think if your just trying to get experience singing in front of people then just do karoake for a while, I love it myself, and used to hate it. But it can be fun and put you in front of people.
