Thanks for the input. As a beginner transitions really give me the most trouble.
I'll use your advice.

Fortunately as long as the band is tight together, playing raw live rock like we do. The overall tempo can surge and drag a bit with the emotional changes in a song without being really noticeable to non musicians.

The emotional changes in a song are even better when we don't lose tempo, though.
It's really disconcerting to be tapping one's foot in time with the music, getting into it - and then have to keep stopping and re-starting, because the band drifts.
If I have to re-adjust more than twice, I usually stop tapping altogether, and start talking with people . . .
'course, that's just me . . .
Still -
We never want the audience to have better tempo than us . . .
