I'm pretty optimistic about the situation from the way it sounds. He hasn't been "singing" that long, so maybe with some time he will come into his own. I experienced this with a vocalist before. At first he was horribly bland, and then one day at practice it seemed like his vocal style just jumped out of him. I know that's mainly because he wanted to excel. So if this vocalist wants it bad enough, he could very well just open up vocally as he breaks in his voice. Determination is powerful.
It's very tough being in a band with your buddies, especially when you break communication over what's supposed to be fun, first and foremost. But playing with your comrades is the best!
