I rarely ever experience a failure to feed or extract.
That being said, if a man is going to compete or bet his life on any semi auto he should train in proficiently clearing jams as it is always a possibility.
The .45LC is an excellent old cartridge left over from the black powder era.
Plenty of knock down to be a fight stopper and amazingly accurate in a good weapon.
I hand load mine with a hard cast 255 grain lead bullet at a moderate velocity. I have hand loaded them for a Ruger Black Hawk at near 44 mag energy levels.
I recommend the gun you are comfortable with. That's whats important.
My concealed carry choice is a Smith and Wesson model 19-4 357 with a four inch barrel.
I hand load a moderate velocity 158 grain lead semi wadcutter.
Supremely accurate, mild recoil ( for a 357 ). Another reason I carry a revolver besides extreme reliability is I always carry. Often when around home the first round is a shot shell ( like a little shotgun ) that is great for dispatching snakes or breaking up a dog fight.
The best protection in the home is a short barreled or youth model 12 or 20 gauge shotgun loaded with # 6 -#8 shot.
Lethal at "indoor" ranges and a lot less likely to over penetrate walls endangering by standers / neighbors.
The sound of a shotgun being pumped into battery is the universal "get the hell out of my house" sound.
