Our father's father hated their music too. Some of us are just getting older and can't relate maybe.

I'm personally stuck in the 90s musically. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP, and the like. If that ain't rock n roll neither is Led Zepplin damnit!

Kidding. I love all kinds of music but we all have our preferences.

There are some good bands out there today making new music... the "industry" has bastardized music IMO. You have to wander beyond the radio dial more than not these days to hear something that will appeal to you. Of course that is my opinion.

I agree. It seems like most parents have problems with what their kids listen to. I listen to about everything just because it is music and I am a musician. All music is a learning experience for me. Some stuff I think I won't like I end up liking. I learn something from any and every musician out there. Even if the only thing I learn is that I don't like it, at least I learned something.

I'm going to see Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin and Nickleback May 5th. Jacked. I don't care much for Nickleback, but I love me some Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin...

And Dream Theater is touring with Iron Maiden this summer, so I may try and see that too.

Rock and Roll isn't dead. Far from it.

Some of the acts I'd be interested in seeing that are coming to B'ham this year:

Doobie Bros
Three Days Grace with Chevelle and Adelitas Way
Allman Brothers Band
Michael McDonald
Aretha Franklin
Van Morrison
Oak Ridge Boys
ZZ Top
Chicago

And that's just what is booked now. So, nahh, not dead.

Oh man! I'd love to see that. I love Chevelle!

And there are some Three Days Grace songs I totally dig too.

There's only so many times you can see Chicago and Doobie Brothers. It's like they could just show a dvd of the previous year's concerts and no one would notice. Where's the new bands? Green Day is not a new band. I think the promoter is just playing it safe since concert attendence has fallen off the past few years. Oh well.

I for one will NEVER get tired of the Doobie Brothers and Chicago. That music has way more chops than the so called NEW MUSIC 3 chord sh!t!

As far as rock turning country I think you have it backwards as a lot of "new country" as they call it is just a lot of "refried southern rock".

Hey that may be a new sub -genre of rock !

All things rock are alive and well, just listen to a lot of the music posted on this site.

I think a lot of us are just too lazy to get up and do what needs to be done to get it to those of us that appreciate what real rock and roll brings. A sense of belonging to something.

But anyhow rock will never die.

Keep on rocking in Paradise !!!!

I personally think rock should die, or at least the classical perception of it. I'm tired of seeing bands with Guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and maybe a keyboardist. I would like to see people in bands that play more interesting instruments like Harp, Cello, Brass, etc. There's too many guitar rock bands, way too many. I think now if you're a guitarist, it's cliche' unless you're doing something new with it. Steve Albini did something new by making noise punk, Genesis P. Orridge did something new by making odd picking/scratching devices to play the bass, etc. I think people need to start turning themselves on to other instruments. It's hard to find a brass player interested in making Industrial music, it's hard to find a Cellist that wants to do heavy metal, it's hard to find a harp player that wants to do rock, etc. I say rock music is killing itself slowly by sticking to the same formula. Not necessarily in it's sound, but definitely in it's approach to making music.

I have had such a sheltered life, at 49 I discovered Korn, at 50 I found Metalica, I'm hoping for something even better at 51. I think the digital / cd age has enhanced music so much.

I don't think rock is dead, just the passion that leads to great rock and roll.

I grew up with R&R, it's one thing I know well. The passion has gone dormant. People don't buy CDs, hardly go to concerts, won't go out and support local musicians. There is no cause that unite us as musicians anymore, the brotherhood has been forgotten. When I was younger we lived for R&R, we were always at the record and music stores, and played music until late in the night. Now it's once a week for old times sake. Sorry I'm just a little jaded, long week.

Good point about the advertisements SP.
Anything being hawked as sexy or the in thing these days has a distorted guitar sound track behind it.
But if they are selling tampons or medication for depression it is something psudo classical or elevator pop music.
