I would have to mention David Bowie, Eddie Vedder, Roger Daltrey, Peter Gabriel and Ian Gillian.

I never think of Gabriel as a great vocalist. I like his vocals, but to me he's more of a songwriter. I love his stuff...

And Vedder... iconic as well.

Rock N Roll?

Chris Cornell
Dio
Robert Plant

For some reason I always liked Don Dokkens voice too.

A lot of great ones...

And John Lennon is the only voice to pull me out of a dead sleep into conciousness. ('A day in the life' on the radio when I was a kid)

Lou Gramm. The guy could switch from a soft ballad to a hard rocker with the greatest of ease. I always favored guys like Delp and Perry, but always felt that they fell short in delivering a true rock powerhouse vocal. Gramm could do a Steve Perry stlyle song, and then turn around and do something ala Paul Rodgers. That versatility earns him my vote.

Paul Rogers is another powerhouse singer.

Does anyone like Burton Cummings?

Just as a friend.

Burton had a great voice, he could do hard rock or ballads equally well. "No Time", "Undun", "American Woman", "No Sugar Tonight" all classics.

Some other singers I admire...

Aretha Franklin
Freddie Mercury
Jackie Wilson
Kate Bush
Luther Vandross
Paul Rogers
Mariah Carey
Sonny Turner - Anyone know who he is? ;-)
(I actually played golf with him once)

And what about vocalists who are not considered powerhouses, but have that unmistakable tone and style, that you never question who it is singing... Like Bonnie Rait or even James Taylor.

I'm looking through all these replies. Did anybody mention David Lee Roth? He's one of my faves as well as Bon Scott. Also I always liked Jim Morrison. My favorite country singer is Dwight Yoakam. I've got a lot of blues faves but right near the top is Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Bill Blue, and I even played in a band with a local singer who was awesome named Lawrence Steele. Some gals I've always liked are Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, and for blues Ida McBeth (Kansas City's own), soul it's Aretha Franklin. A lot of great vocalists out there...Hard to nail down an all-time favorite for me...of the Bandmixers I've listened to I think Craig Maxim and Neanderpaul are both truly exceptional vocalists...
