Well, IMO.. Heavy Metal, is Metal !
Growlers, and noise makers, are NOT, and have NEVER been, musicians!!
I disagree. I'm not a growler/screamo er myself, but I've listened to some bands whose musical compositions are amazing (Opeth is a case in point) and the growling gets accross an emotion that is appropriate for the lyrical content of the song being presented.
People are emotional beings, and emotions are not limited to happy and sad. Anger is also there and conveyed in many ways. Screaming is one of them, and I'm surprised it hasn't been mainstreamed around the same time as the Thrash/Punk/Heavy metal scene broke ground in America (my american bias is showing, isn't it?).
Anyways, I think's there's room for it. I also think it, like every other genre, (screamo) uses that genre's unique attribute (screaming) too much, watering down it's effect which could be more powerful when contrasted with it's non-use. I.E., instead of screaming the entire song, singing/whispering most of the song so the scream can EMPHASISES the emotion, instead of making the whole song a monotonic screamo diatribe.
