I started playing out in bands about 1966 and up until the early 80's, I played mostly nothing BUT covers!

I developed my performance and songwriting skills along the way until I was involved in any all original bands.

Of course, I'm not implying that there is a right or wrong way to develop band playin' skills, creative or otherwise. It primarily comes by doing it!
Originals or covers, what is most important is that you practice and perform them to the best of your abilities.

P.S. To this day, I can say that I would rather LISTEN to a good cover band then a mundane original band. Make sure your bands original material is something that most people might want to listen to! (that is, if you want to make a few bucks out of it)

If you are a novice, try some covers until someone actually likes what you are playing.

For me ... it's not whether the music is originals or covers ... it about whether it well writen or crap .. ... and there a lot of crappy originals out there.

Ya know, I gotta agree with this sentiment!

There's a certain sense of accomplishment when you do that cover in a new way, or even when you FINALLY get that tough part worked out perfectly, like it was in the original.

I like to approach most covers as if they were originals, anyway, & write my own guitar or bass parts to the piece, while trying to maintain the spirit of the thing.
