I play around 7 times a month these days and I get paid to do it in a lot of different genres. You come here looking for something and when you didnt get it you get pissed.

I gave you what I thought was good advice and you obviously dont deserve that. If you are so thin skined that you cant take what I said to you then you need to find something else to do, cause with the chip on your shoulder and your lack of musical ability this is going to be a tough game for you to participate in. I know cause Ive been there and when I was a young punk I was just like you.

Btw...it's Satriani, not Satirani, child, & if you're gonna cover his work, your chops best be MUCH better than they are. Perhaps you should start with something a little simpler?

You could learn one hell of a lot from JW. I've been in the biz since '72, & I've learned much from him. Well...you could learn if you got your head out of your own ass & saw things as they are, anyway.

Everyone likes to be praised. Of course it feels good.

But there's a world of difference between the praise of a non-musician and a musician. And anyone who is a musician knows this.

You've got chops Sean. No doubt. And yeah, you can post a YouTube video and get a lot of props from non-musicians. And if that makes you feel better about yourself and your playing, so be it. But just be aware of who those people are and the expertise that they are lacking...


There's a whole lot more to being a great musician - and indeed, a great guitar player - than chops. I've seen my share of guys like you who had chops, who could wank off all day long, but who couldn't put a melody or song together to save their ass, and couldn't learn anyone else's stuff like it's supposed to be played.

For instance, here's a YouTube video I actually admire. It's a cover of a Van Halen song by Kent Carlevi:

Now, Kent has chops too, but what he's done here is embody the spirit of Eddy's playing on this song. He knows the song note-for-note, and that's obvious from watching the video and listening to it, but this isn't a mimic job; he's playing with emotion and putting his own little touches on it while he's covering Eddie's song.

This video shows me that (a) he's got chops, like you, but that he also (b) understands the song he's covering at a much deeper level than just playing "over the top" of it. He's putting his chops to good use, instead of mindless wanking.

If you would have done something like that with Satriani's "Summer Song", hitting the harmonics at the intro instead of wanking out tapping, and hitting all the little nuances in the melodies and main themes instead of doing your own thing, then I would have given you a lot of praise.

But you didn't do anything like that; all it showed me is that you know how to wank. And while that might be really impressive to a non-musician, it's nothing to a veteran player.

I've impressed my fair share of non-musicians over the years, and I've done it with crappy technique and bad playing. It's a hollow victory. I've got to the point where, whether I played good or bad, the praise of a non-musician doens't mean much to me. I welcome it; it's nice to entertain someone, but if they tell me I'm a good or great player, I know they don't have any actual expertise to back that up.


If you're going to come to this forum - a forum full of musicians - you have to understand we're going to critique your stuff a lot differently than a non-musician will.

You can post all the Youtube videos you want to, it's irrelevant. Are you GIGGING professionally? Do you have your own CD for sale? I would be way more impressed if you were to post a Youtube video of you at an actual gig. You could play in your own room in front of a camera forever, but that doesn't impress me. The people here who are critiquing are for the most part PROFESSIONALS who MAKE MONEY (hopefully) GIGGING. Anything short of that is, well short of that...
