some liner notes you will probably not be able to google up:
""Yah Mo B There" was kind of an original phrase on our part, although I have to give James (James Ingram) most of the credit on that one. We were talking about how to write 'God will be there' without scaring most of the audience away. We wanted the message to be strong, but we felt that certain words would be too overwhelming to the mainstream audience. So James said that the original name for God in Hebrew is Yahweh. It would be something that everybody could relate to- the song is about God as you've come to know Him. So, therefore, we are not excluding anyone, but we are getting the idea across that FAITH is a powerful thing. That's really what the song was about."

McDonald returned to the top of the Pop Singles chart in June 1986 with "On My Own", a duet with R&B diva Patti LaBelle that was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and taken from LaBelle's LP Winner In You ... McDonald had worked with Bacharach on a previous project and jumped at the chance to sing with LaBelle on this exquisite ballad....Though 'sing with' is a bit of a mis-statement__ the duet partners cut their vocal tracks separately in studios at opposite ends of the U.S. .." Isang to Patti's voice on tape, and I think I got the better end of the deal", McDonald says, " Patti's such an awesome performer that I would have been a little apprehensive to go one-on-one with her in the studio..the first time we sang it live together was on The Tonight Show after the song was a #1 hit. It was great!

I hear the first notes in the tune as - Ab - B - D - F with a triplet on the 2nd thru 4th notes of the phrase and a 1/8th note the triplet (3/8th notes) and then a whole note 3-note chord bird's eye :D :)

"I didn't say I HATED SD, I said 'I can't stand SD'."
--Sure clears that right up.

Ok, what you actually said (in the first graph) was, "When I hear someone play maj.7s all night long I want to throw up!!" What band are you referring to? The sig sound for SD--as Dayne noted--is rooted in the 9 chord. Do they play the Maj7? Sure. What jazz musician doesn't? That's like goin' to work w/ your toolbox half full. As a pianist, I know Fagen's scores pretty well (actually have quite a few of them), and the claim that he plays Maj7s "all night long" is simply inaccurate. I only wish it were that easy. So while I misquoted you, the point is still accurate.

"I call these 'Stimpy' chords (happy, happy......joy, joy!!!!)" Eh? Never have I heard SD's music described that way. I'd add a few links, but P-guy beat me to it. I'll grant that it's "clean," but I don't see that as a bad thing (and it's ok if you do--lotsa folks prefer a grittier sound). Fagen is known to be meticulous in the studio--it took a full year to complete both Gaucho & Nightfly--and that's a big reason why they didn't tour much.

It's ok if anyone "can't stand SD," but try to at least have a well-founded criticism (and saying it's too clean for your taste is valid). Or just say you "can't stand SD" on general principle. I feel that way about synths, for the most part; it's a "can't stand" I just can't explain.

ok, ok the verdict is in... you can either hate SD, like/love SD, and then there's the middle ground.. indifference.. :)
