So my publisher has me set to take part in a writers night here in town. Josh Pennington is hosting it and I think there are going to be 5 of us. The publisher is bringing a producer from Nashville to attend it. It's a chance to get my name out as a writer, which is what I'm after mostly. I'm not interested in being a Rock Star. I just want to sell a song and join the union to get my minimum so I can make a decent living performing and hopefully sell a few more.
So my question would be: should I perform several styles of my material or try using one?
Any idea's?
I've never participated, or even attended one. Anyone here that has?

I have never been involved in anything like that Hayden. But if you keep an open mind I am sure the others in attendence will give you ideas of what you talents need to display.
Best of luck to ya.

Hayden, I would present as many styles that you are capable of doing. Don't let them see just one side of you. This is a great opportunity for you, Mr. Longhaired Dude :) . You are in an enviable position so display as many styles that time will allow. If you have time to display only 2 styles make sure they are on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example rock and classical are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Therefore it will be assumed that you must be able to handle several styles that are in between.

I would show as many styles as they would allow you, if that's how they do it.

Do you have to play or sing it to them?

Sounds like a really cool opportunity then Hayden. I'd show em' a few samples of your best...from hard to soft, heavy to light, love to hate, and happy to sad. If I was gonna hire a writer, I'd want one with many genres unless it was for a specific band or something.

do it all and be very "Stream OF Consciousness" as in say whatever comes into your head. Let someone else disseminate the filet from the filth.

Good writers write en mass and other cheesers go through and pick the best material. Let them know you are a "fountain coming down mountain".

lol. (fountain comin down the mountain)that's great sh*t Scotty!

Hey I'm booked for a show @ the City's 4th of July Celebration and it's also @ The Forum where I'll be doing the writers night. I'll be doing a half hour set to start off the nights activities. That should help me get a feel of the place and help me be more relaxed come writers night.
I'm doing a solo performance but I may have an accompanying vocalist for back up & harmony on 4 of the song's.

If only I were still in Kentucky....

I've heard of these writers nights; they are pretty cool; unless the others writers are like pit bulls just waiting to draw blood...that doesn't usually happen, only if I were to attend would something that unruly happen....LOL...seriously...it's a great, great opportunity and wish I could be a part of something like that. I need to see if I can find something in this area that offers a writers night. Would probably have to go into Detroit...not something I'm anxious to do right now...but maybe I'd run into M & M on 8 mile.....LOL

Let us know how it goes...sounds like a sweet deal to me.

Writers like pitbulls?

If anyone dare said anything stupid to you, I would pause for 3 seconds..(count them) and then slowly and softly ask them if their mother had any writers that survived the birthing process or you just the the closest thing to the jersey devil that can 1-4-5 it on down the dirt road..

Well the show went off typically; I went for 3 sound check's on 3 different days and it was like I'd never been there @ showtime! They started back @ ground zero and I couldn't hear a thing (even after asking for it 3 X on mic). But apparently it came over well enough. I never listen to my friend's because they'll lie to you to make you feel good, but several people complimented me on the way out and the applause was great so I think it went well!

It might have been videotaped so I'll shoot ya's a link if I can get a copy...
