So, do you write hit songs? or MOR album tracks?
A recorded song has two principal sets of rights—the publishing and the master recording. The publishing covers the copyright of the composition, and the master is the sound-recording copyright. The master is the real estate; the publishing is the mineral rights under the land, and the air rights. In addition there are mechanical royalties, which are based on sales, and performance royalties, for when a song is played or performed in public, including on the radio.

There are also synchronization rights, for use of a song in a commercial, ball game, TV show, or movie. In some countries (though not in the United States), there are neighboring rights, which are granted to non-authors who are closely connected to the song, such as the performers. The system is ridiculously complicated, as it’s supposed to be. It takes a music attorney like Davis to understand all the complexities in royalties payments. Labels have lots of them..But ever since Napster set music free in 1998, the customer has been able to get any hit he wants without paying for it. This presents a problem, if you’re Clive Davis or Jason Flom, because making hits, as we will see, can be very expensive. “What would happen if shoppers had the option to get groceries or furniture for free?” Flom asks. “Those businesses would have to adapt rapidly, just as we’ve had to do.”

Even on the legal streaming services, such as Spotify, music consumption is “frictionless”—a favorite word of techies. It means—well, not “free” exactly, but at least unburdened by the inconvenience of purchasing a product. You’ve gone from a world of scarcity to one of abundance. Nothing is for sale, because everything is available. For both the pirates and the paying subscribers, buying records is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. And yet the hits go on and on.

Let those who have reached the top 20 nation wide with one of their songs speak first. The rest of us may think fondly of our gibberish. :) :)

I think for the 1st time in my life that I am really on to something musically, although so far all I have got is a chord sequence with me whistling, but the sad part is it will probably turn out to be gibberish, cause I won't be able to lay out the grand plan without just a tad of help.. the Brooklyn bridge took more than one person to envision it and construct it, same with the internet, the first locomotive,. I'm starting to believe one person can not compose a good tune by himself..maybe I will pull out the DR-05 and record it, just a chord sequence and me whistling a vocal melody.. and again, if somebody helps complete it, I will need the trust that all parties are honest..

I write a lot of good songs and a lot I'm not sure of because they are not finished. I'm thinking they will all turn out great just need time as a lot of riffs, hooks lacking words but some partially written. just the music itself causes feelings so add the right words/subject matter and it will really be something. hmu!

ok, I'm baaaaaack! LOL.. bought the little Tascam DR-05 back a week or so after I posted the "Jesse Coles James Russellville" post..BTW, that was recorded on Rebecca's i-phone or some sort of smart phone LOL..I told myself that day, I need to get one of those DR-o5 thingies.. so I can bring it to next rehearsal to get an idea of how rough or refined the sound we were emitting was..LOL, sadly, the thing fell apart..but back on topic, the DR-05 has sat in it's box, and have looked over the operating instructions just a little, and it otr that will probably show when I hook it up to the puter in a few minutes after I read the instructions again, LOL.. to upload a real rough musical idea that I am wanting to get help on fleshing it out, and I mean it will need tons of fleshing LOL, but I see it as a country music ballad something that that Montgomery cat would sing well, once it's completed and that is a long way off.. back when I read the manual on how to get the wav file onto the hard disk LOL later gators.. :D

you are most welcome to click on the link, it is very rough, the kinks are just beginning to get worked out, but we could be songwriting buds or galfriends possibly?/.. so if you have sensitive ears , steer clear, I am trying to convey the musical idea, not by any means a even close to finished product.. I hear John Michael Montgomery singing it in my bliss point of my mind..LOL..of course no lyric, but that is why collaborators are needed, if I don't find others sharing the idea the tune would make a great ballad, then ignore, I would love to work with Slacker on this, jook too, bit I'm afraid it is not crazy sounding enough for jook's tastes.??

anybody is welcome, I was not excluding anybody, I know Slacker is a country artist, and do not know of many other country music specialists here at the boards, anybody is welcome, just be honest, and don't take my "idea" as a thief would take it.. I will share but I don't like thieves at all.. :D

i'm not sure about genre.....i do hear it as more country than jazz and could easily imagine a Dwight Yokem style vocal over those changes.

But Dayne......good gawd man, next time please tune up!!!!

I'm hearing Neil Young's acoustic stuff since after about Harvest Moon. Not really sure about the Fm. Not hearing how it works into the gumbo. But I like it in theory. I'll try to break this out next practice, since the P-guy part 3 worked so wonderfully last practice.
