Now that I've got the Radial PZ Preamp/DI, which has a dedicated tuner out jack I figured I start looking at guitar tuner pedals. WIth the dedicated output, I can leave it on all the time (AC powered of course), so no more clip-on tuner for my Taylor, and no more using the built-in Fishman tuner on my Fender or Ibanez acoustics. Also, it'll serve good purpose at the open mics as ome folks show up with badly tuned guitars - either because they just can't hear it, or because their tuners are not accurate.

So the concensus of opinions is that besides the Boss TU-2 (old model) and TU3, the Korg PitchBlack and TC Polytune are the best choices for dark stage and distance visibility AND accuracy.

What do you guys use for a tuner?

Boss TU-2 (in the bypass mode) where it's always on. I use it w a power supply.

I also use snarks and the new little PLANET WAVES (D'Addario) micro tuner that I actually prefer to SNARKS. I think they're slightly more accurate and are quicker at deciding the pitch of the note you're sounding.

I use Peterson VS- Strobo

The Polytune looks like it might be even better.

I use a Snark and like it fine. Also got a Korg for comparison - didn't impress me that much.

My amp (Fender Mustang 2000) has a foot switch which does lots of useful things, including displaying a tuner.

Foot pedals or clp-ons? I've got a mini-Korg clip-on that is the most accurate of the 4 clip-on tuners I've got.

I think Musicians Friend monitors my ebay searches and watch list. I had been watching several Polytunes and Pitchblacks, waiting until I saw a good deal. So what do I see in my mailbox last night? MF 'Stupid Deal of the Day', Pitchblack for $40 shipped (normally $90). I ordered it.

Guitar is a tempered instrument. It must be set up and played as such. It constantly can change. It is fretted and there is no such thing as perfection. Just the same as a piano. When you play with "FIXED" instruments you have to be able to continuously be able to adjust.

TUNERS CAN'T DO THAT. And they most certainly won't be able to solve your personal problems.

glen, it's obvious you're very angry and perhaps not thinking too clearly. tuners ARE a necessary evil for folks who play out regularly. tuning by ear in a noisy club or bar isn't always a viable option.

I'm sure when you get your anger under control that will make sense to you.

Yeah... And thats just fine if you only play for old deaf farts. Some of us still hear pretty damn good. Thats even after many 100 + DB nights, thousands of gunshot rounds, and many woman screaming they love you, don't leave.

i'll be sure to let Pat Martino and John Scofield know that! I saw them both recently and damn... both of those "beginners" were using tuners. DOH!

proving that tuners are in fact quite useful for people who play out regularly.

i'm not sure if you do that anymore, glen.....but if these days your playing is limited to Guitar Center Battle Of the Blues Gods Contests and sitting around on your couch....maybe you DON'T need a tuner afterall.

(most likely scenario.... you use one as much as anyone else but are choosing to misrep that to have one more thing to carp about. how am I doing??? is that about the size of it?)

Actually Mark, go listen to to some of your stuff... The only time you are really in tune is when you are on the metal board with mallets. It doesn't make me angry... but not understanding the full fundamentals of tuning should make you angry.
