Any of you old farts have trouble with this Demon? Yesterday at work I was building desks and I turned while rolling out edgeband. I noticed pain in my hamstring muscle and soon after it hurt from my lower left back all the way down my left leg. I was up hurting all night unbelievable pain!

Ouch, sorry to hear you're suffering Jeff. I've had it before, but *knock on wood* not for a while.
It's a pinched nerve (the sciatic nerve) in your back, which is why the pain goes all the way down your leg. There are a number of exercises that you can do to ease the pinching - various stretches, including laying on the floor with your back absolutely on the floor (not arched) and lifting one leg up at a time, etc. Hot bath with jacuzzi jets, if available. Heating pad.
You could also seek out a chiropractor.

Was a time.
Healing rest, super hydration followed by slow renewal of activity that always begins with stretching.

Vitamin D and calcium supplementation helps too.

Thanks guys for the advise. We had a keyboard player coming out to audition today and I had to cancel. That really sucks because this is a start up band with really good players I hope they don't get discouraged! This band is at the point where something like this could destroy any momentum. I have been doing most of the things suggested as my friend Barry had this and wound up going for surgery as all other attempts at relief failed. It took him 8 months to get back to a normal life and he gave up music because of the worry of relapse!
George, what are your thoughts on chiropractors? I just don't trust them.

Mr. Haley

A chiropractor can make the pain go away. Sometimes takes a couple visits.

They will however, want you to get married but I never do.

Everyone I know who has gone to chiropractor has to keep going....no way I'm letting someone experiment with my spine. They are not medical doctors.

My sciatica flares up when I do a lot of sitting in an uncomfortable chair....like right now because of a long airplane flight. Wooden chairs are the worst! I find the best thing is when it starts, go lay down on your back with your knees propped up for about 20 minutes.

When you can't do that immediately, at least shift your weight to the other leg while sitting until you can.

I didn't realize what it was and worked the rest of the day. Well I stayed at work another 3 hrs. I did keep my weight off it as much as possible. I really irritated that nerve this is the worst pain I have ever experienced. If that nerve doesn't settle down I'm going to the Dr. Monday. I have been flat on my back since yesterday at 5.

Everyone is trying to give you some good advice. It is just plain PAINFUL.

I did it 25 years ago, sliding down a hill with some equipment. Three days later I reached over to tie my shoe laces. I couldn't get off the floor for a day.

I really feel bad for you. It is probably pain that is close to child birth.

I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER.

The bad news is there really isn't much a doctor could do except pain medicine and muscle relaxers.

you just sort of have to push on through...I pray for your healing.

I suggest you see a reputable faith healer and have him expel (as you call it) the Demon.. it works if you find the right guy

Chiropractic . . .
My good friend the Chiropractor is the ONLY reason I am able to do physical labor.
If not for being blessed in meeting him through another friend, I'd just be another statistic on disability.
Do I still see him.
Yes, maybe once or twice a year . . . or just to say thank you.

do you have "drop foot" as associated with sciatica? .. if so, sometimes they can scrape out the calciated deposits within the BACK and relieves the pinched nerve..

My friend had this done. There is some improvement today. Dane I am not sure what you mean by drop foot but I am dragging my left foot around. Today I notice more flexibility in my body and less stiffness in the left leg!

In my opinion it's good to see a chiropractor in severe situations, but a mistake to regularly get cracked around.
I've been 3 times in my life.
They want you to have regular crackings, but I decline. You just need to be able to function without extreme pain or immobility.

I think if you go on a regular basis, you end up needing to go, cuz nothing stats in place anymore.

Yep, both my wife and I have suffered with this from time to time. Mine was from lifting and twisting, my wife's was from a slow twisting fall while avoiding a sleeping hound dog.

My case is pretty mild and I can work it out using specific home stretching exercises. My wife's was much more severe and required physical therapy for 3 months and continued stretching exercises. It can be pretty overwhelming pain so I lift more carefully now and exercise my back and torso muscles regularly. This is one of the reasons I scaled back on the size and weight of my gig rig and PA gear. I am no use to anyone if I tweak that nerve again.
