@Slacker:

roses are red
give them to a lover
its not good to judge
a book by its cover

@paperdog and slacker: Its a competition for FUN. It would be great to see different versions of songs from the same set of lyrics. The lyricists who submit their work know that if they win their lyrics will be used by musicians for the challenge. If a musician liked the finished product of the song, they could very well purchase the lyrics from the lyricist so copyright would not be an issue.

I take it you two probably didn't even bother to follow the link and you are just here to be negative. In that case I remind you that we are all in music because its something we love to do. Something that brings friends together. Something that can tell our life stories. I'm not here to promote "a big juicy record deal" as PaperDog puts it. Just here to try and spread the word about a fun music competition. Sorry if that doesnt meet all your wants and needs.

And to put some positive light on this thread...I listened to both of you music pages and really enjoyed what I listened to. I am a fan of the type of music you both play. Keep the good music coming.

Forget it vertical challenge... Has nothing to do with you, ... us old time cranky people already been through the mill. DOG is the only one that tries to run an honest competition.

Been doing it for years... But he gets paid off well...

Just kidding GRANT!

The verses are all messed up rhythmically - the first verse seems to have an extra half-line but the rhymes don't coincide with the AA-BB scheme in verse 2, in fact a 'prechorus' line is added for a rhyme in verse 1? REWRITE TIME!

@Glenny - This thread does have everything to do with me since I created. A bit hypocritical on your part to chime in and says it has nothing to do with me. Again, I'm just here to spread the good word on a competition for FUN! Not trying to steal anything from DOG. I guess if this is a thread for"old cranky people" I am in the wrong spot. The younger generation is all for this and gets what its all about.

@Mike: We realize that these lyricists are not professionals and some of their formats may be a bit unorthodox to what we are all used to, but these lyrics can be composed into a song. It takes the creativity and talent of a musician to get the job done. Half of this site is about giving ordinary people (both lyricists and musicians) the chance to do create a potentially good song.

You'll have to excuse we the jaded. So many "contests" come through here we generally assume that it is someone to be trying to make a fast buck off someone else's creativity. But that is the case some of the time...well, most of the time. :)

As someone who has written (and discarded) a ton of songs, I've learned that one doesn't take the firs set of words written out as the 'final version', and more times than not, the words must be rewritten to get the rhythm and patterns right.

Good luck. Kind of reminds of the ads I used to see all the time in those 'song words' magazines (long before the days of the internet): "Send us your poems and we will make songs out of them" (yeah, for $20 they would sing your song to the tune of 'Old MacDonald'!)

Yeah, but that's only 99.99998% of the time! This might be the .00002% exception..

Lyrical,
Thanks for the props on our songs.

The facts are that a lot of spoofers hit this site, toss out carrots to lure the song-writers in, and they make a ton of money by using the songs as lures to get advertisers to jump in. The artists almost always NEVER get any of that monetary action. Its often disguised as 'contest' It's a despicable practice and most of us here are way on to it. Please forgive us for our cynical nature.

I run a contest twice a year in my town. Its still trying to gain momemtum. To do it right, it generally costs more than what it earns (in rev) To me its my out-of-pocket contribution to my community, with no strings attached. Artists feel justified and its no harm, no foul for any of them.

I have already managed to bring recording engineers together with budding musicians and they are cutting their first demos... That's what a contest is about...Competition, comeraderie, uniting the musicians and open some doors for them.

Good luck with your contest. ;)

I got tired of submitting songs I wrote back in 80's to various song publishers.. got too many reply comments like "too corny" sounds manufactured" love that sounds manufactured derogatory remark, you are supposed to create a tune and not manufacture it...LOL!!

I do not want to toot my own horn, but my/our tune "Anytime Is Fine" is catchy and has a good hook.. it might have went somewhere if it was once again the 1960's or 70's? it is catchy it is danceable.. but is obsolete, but do you think I care it sounds obsolete? heck no..

@PaperDog: Yeah, I'm no spoofer. I'm a person who has a great passion for music. I play acoustic (intermediate stuff, Im no pro) and I love getting together with friends and just jamming out. I thought that a competition like this online would be great because its accessible to anyone who wants in and the cost of running it is so low. Also because I enjoy seeing how different musicians will take on a set of lyrics. We have four challenges a year with this site and hope to get up to one every month once the site grows. We completed our first challenge last month and in my opinion it was not that great (both lyrics and music wise). The lyrics format was poorly written and the songs were not that great. The important part was that our sites audience still took part in the voting and there were no negative comments about the songs. We have the site to create some good collaborations and connections in the music world. Did I think the songs created were bad...yes. But i respect the musicians entries and in the end music is music. If a person doesn't enjoy it, they shouldnt put it down because there will always be someone who in the end enjoys the music.

@Dane: I like your attitude! Musicians should not care what others think of their songs or what sound they have to them. There will always be a fan to your songs.

Guys check out the two different videos we have on YouTube. They are the songs from the last challenge. Keep in mind that both are based off the same lyrics. The only difference is the musicians who composed them. One has a jazz format to it and the other is formatted using Midi software. Both are VERY different from one another and even though they may not be that great, we still were successful in accomplishing what we wanted - and that is different songs from the same lyrics.

Check out both songs entitled "Way Back When"
