I've talked with a couple people on here about this and was wondering:

Since I have all my own recording equipment and dropbox, why not join forces with whoever from wherever and make whatever? =D

In other words, I thought it would be cool to knock some heads together and write originals- using drop box to bridge the distance between far away people and to send track files back and forth and create a finished product. What do you guys think?

Oh sure it can be done, and has been done. But the bigger question is what is the point, beyond having a nice demo. Most likely you won't be able to form an actual band with the other participants, unless you're willing to move there. Are you?

I'm willing to move anywhere, but not able due to low funds, haha. Nah, I just wanted to get together with folks for fun for the sake of making good music and nothing else.

Well that's the key right there - getting together with some folks and making some good music. Usually those folks need to be in the same room at some point. I would concentrate on your local area; find a drummer and a bass player, and maybe a guitarist or keyboardist and you're on your way. Sax players are still somewhat needed so you could also check into joining an existing group. Good luck.

We tried this several months ago, it floundered.

Not to say that collaborations can't work. Tammy, who doesn't seem to come to these forums any more, does them all the time, I completed one song with her.
So, it can work, as long as each participant's styles gel and there is compatible equipment and file-sharing.

Apparently you missed some of the drama surrounding online collaborations here, or you wouldn't ask.

Yikes, yes. it Looks that way. Oh, and guys above- I'm already working with groups locally so that's covered, and getting paid! =D I just saw this as another opportunity to do more music aside from what I'm already doing in town and decided to test the waters. If anyone wants to and likes consistency you can email me here: mormonboy2010 @ g m a i l . c o m and start collaborating for the heck of it.

Oh yeah, and good points guitarmike! I'm glad you mentioned that because I forgot to add that my setup allows me to work with virtually any type of file. =D And dropbox is free/secure so filesharing isn't a big deal, even with something as big as a wave file.

Sorry Mark, I was under the impression you were looking for a band. Carry on.

Oooooh, okay, I gotcha. No worries, haha. Yeah, just looking for a good time more than anything. I'm just getting the hang of Sonar's latest and greatest (for three hundred dollars less than the original price, boo ya!) and I'm really getting into recording and wanted to work with it more. I've spent most of my life doing live performances so this is a new, exciting venture for me.

If I put a song together in need... I would call on you IF you were interested.
You also plays keys? I could use a real piano player on some tunes.

One of the songs I recorded for my first CD, but then subsequently cut, had a keyboard-done sax solo.
If I need a sax part on a song, something you would contribute, Mark?

It's been done successfully here. This is Jimmy Danger and myself.

Haha, woooow! I just listened to both those recordings, SO good! You have a perfect voice for that style and Jimmy just *kills* that guitar, man. Those riffs are classic. Plenty of variety, but not cramming - just hitting things at the right tone at the right time. Fabulous work.

P.S. The saxophone is soooo easy. Heck, if you wanted to I could start teaching you everything I know about it for free over this. The trick is to make sure that whenever you play it you're doing it because you love it. Any other mindset will likely stunt your growth in the long haul. =D
