One of my favorite lyrical lines is in a song by the Eagles off the Hell Freezes Over album. The song is "Get Over It" I played this song for years. The line is "lets kill all the lawyers kill em tonight" Seriously though I know they worked hard to get through school and they deserve to be paid well! I discovered tonight that one has been SCREWIN me for YEARS and I now have proof! Problem is I'll have to hire ANOTHER attorney to fight this one. The moral of this story is, if you are self employed and you are not Inc. do this or at least LLC. asap. I have learned this the hard way. Otherwise your personal assets are at risk.

Gee, I'm not self employed and I know bands usually form a company to protect their personal assets.

I'm not talking a name. It is about paying an attorney and becoming LLc. or Incorporating. This wasn't musical related. It had to do with my REAL craft.

That's not the best line in the song though...

I wanna find your inner child and kick its little ass

THAT'S the best line in the song...

Lawyers are another story...only lower form of life on this planet is politicians.

I don't know the legalese term for it, but if your work entails "contracts" like building a sundeck for set amount of money for a client in the public realm you need to be protected with a bond or something?..otherwise a self proprietor will suffice if not dealing with the public and just "working for yourself"

Yes. That's exactly what I was referring to.
Fugazi, for example, formed an LLc. in case somebody got injured at one of their shows.

Stay clear of a Sole Proprietorship like the PLAGUE that's what got me in trouble! Form a Corporation or LLc (Limited Liability Corporation).
In Texas you have to have a license and permit bond to get a building permit you also have to have an environmental survey of any building older than 1978.

Jeff, Lawyers dont deserved to get paid sh*t... They are nothing more than glorified paper jockeys, certified to interperet what that paper means. Of course we know that all that paper work was invented and created by lawyers, for lawyers. Lawyers are the biggest f**k parisites on Earth. They are self -serving and that is the plain fact about them.

I hope you slam the ever living shist out the one that screwed you.

In case anybody still doubts how I feel about lawyers, let me just say...If I were diagnosed with a terminal disease and felt I had been victomized by a doctor , I would take an automatic weapon into any one of our law firms and unleash my hatred for lawyers.

:D

My buddy the corporate lawyer in Manhattan said it best, "These days a law license is a license to LIE" and i do believe he meant it.

He's a very good attorney and yet he doesn't sleep well.
His wife wants him to quit law entirely.
She's afraid he will die due to health reasons induced by the stress of dealing with all the different corporate scumbags.

I told him that I think she's right.
Besides, he very down to earth and actually saved a lot of his money.

He's upset because he won't be able to retain the style in which he lives currently but it is really worth it?
I sincerely doubt it.

Bail before they run you into the ground like they do everyone else.
Corporate America only cares about $.

Capitilsts ARE kind gentle souls who only want to better mankind!

Lawyers are Socialists, who have have nothing to do with bettering anything (as long as it takes their own money to do anything)

heh, maybe they want a better mankind to serve them at the dinner table. I don't think wealthy capitalists see the rest of society as anything but lesser-beings who exist only to provide service and labor. and do not deserve freedom, especially financial freedom.

Jeff, if you want to incorporate , you can do this without an attorney. There is a ton of lit outthere that can walk you through it. But why the hell do you want to incorporate?

That just puts you on the radar to get gouged by the gov (You get taxed twice...once for you as the officer, and once for the corporation) .

If you intend to expand to the size of your biz to a giant, then I'd say go for it. But from my own understanding and experience, if you aren't banking at least 500-800K a year, presently , you're just wasting your time . Better to keep it small, and divert your income into some serious investments, retirement plans, etc.

You can still set up a shop, keep it in the family, hire a crew, . You still have to do payroll taxes, but you can maintain solid leverage.

Being incorporated is for the serious big-dogs. All too often, I see little guys trying to hang a big-dog shingle...Next thing you know they are tanking.

You don't need that shingle to be a success.

I realize there are some protections with incorporation... Also gonna draw big dog lawyers who want big-dog payments. You get big dog lawsuits on your ass annualy (Almost a guarantee) and get tanked.

Like I said, if you want to go big, then Incorporation makes sense... (By design, the bylaws are typically geared to enforce profits...at almost any expense)

Do ya need that headache bro?

I would say , do what you do, charge a fair rate and save some of that incomes as deferred (tax-writeoff) via IRAs, etc
